Desde 2021, se clasifica como un subtipo de diabetes tipo 1; sin embargo, este término es aceptado en la práctica clínica. El artículo presenta una paciente femenina de 23 años inicialmente diagnosticada con diabetes tipo 2, quien persistió con síntomas y mal control glucémico a pesar del tratamiento. Debido a la falta de respuesta terapéutica, fue remitida a endocrinología, donde se confirmó el diagnóstico mediante la presencia de autoanticuerpos contra células de los islotes y niveles indetectables de péptido C. Se inició insulinoterapia, logrando mejoría clínica. Este caso resalta la importancia de sospechar esta patología en adultos jóvenes con diagnóstico previo de diabetes tipo 2 y control inadecuado, ya que el diagnóstico y tratamiento oportunos son esenciales para retrasar su progresión.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract: Latent autoimmune diabetes in adults is a form of autoimmune diabetes with slow progression in adulthood, often underdiagnosed, which contributes to its apparent low prevalence. Since 2021, it has been classified as a subtype of type 1 diabetes; however, the term is accepted in clinical practice. The article presents a 23-year-old female patient initially diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, who persisted with symptoms and poor glycemic control despite treatment. Due to the lack of therapeutic response, she was referred to endocrinology, where the diagnosis was confirmed by the presence of autoantibodies against islet cells and undetectable C-peptide levels. Insulin therapy was initiated, leading to clinical improvement. This case highlights the importance of suspecting this condition in young adults with a previous diagnosis of type 2 diabetes and inadequate control, as timely diagnosis and treatment are essential to delaying its progression.]]></p></abstract>
