Objetivo:  evaluar la efectividad de un programa educativo y una alerta electrónica en el uso de PAT en pacientes hospitalizados con riesgo de ETEV.  Diseño:  cuasiexperimental no controlado pre y posintervención.  Pacientes:  &#8805;18 años, hombres y mujeres con indicación de PAT y hospitalizados &#8805;72 horas en el 2009 (preintervención), 2016 (poseducación) y 2017 (posalerta).  Métodos:  calculamos odd ratios (OR) crudos y ajustados por edad, sexo, tipo de paciente y factores de riesgo de ETEV para la asociación entre el uso de PAT y las intervenciones.  Resultados:  incluimos 239 pacientes (80 preintervención, 80 poseducación y 79 posalerta). El uso de PAT incrementó del 66,2% preintervención al 90% posalerta. El grupo posalerta tuvo 3,6 veces más posibilidades de recibir PAT en el análisis ajustado (OR: 3,6 IC 95%: 1,4-9,1). Las intervenciones no modificaron significativamente el uso de PAT en pacientes médicos.  Conclusiones:  un programa educativo y una alerta electrónica son efectivos para aumentar el uso de PAT en pacientes hospitalizados, con especial beneficio en los pacientes quirúrgicos.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract  Background:  Antithrombotic prophylaxis in hospitalized patients at risk of venous thromboembolic disease (VTE) is often overlooked.  Objective:  To evaluate the effectiveness of an educational program and an electronic alert on antithrombotic prophylaxis utilization in hospitalized patients at risk of VTE.  Design:  Quasi-experimental uncontrolled preand post-intervention study.  Patients:  &#8805;18 years, both genders with prophylaxis indication, and hospitalized &#8805;72 hours in 2009 (pre-intervention), 2016 (post-education), and 2017 (post-alert).  Methods:  We calculated crude and adjusted odds ratios (OR) for age, sex, patient type, and VTE risk factors for the association between antithrombotic prophylaxis use and interventions.  Results:  We included 239 patients (80 pre-intervention, 80 post-education, and 79 post-alert). Prophylaxis utilization increased from 66.2% pre-intervention to 90% post-alert. The post-alert group had 3.6 times higher odds of receiving prophylaxis in adjusted analysis (OR: 3.6, 95% CI: 1.4-9.1). Interventions did not significantly alter prophylaxis use in medical patients.
