El OROV circula a través de ciclos selváticos y urbanos, siendo el mosquito Culicoides paraensis el vector principal en áreas urbanas, donde los humanos actúan como el principal huésped. En la mayoría de los casos, la fiebre del OROV se presenta con síntomas leves, sin embargo, ocasionalmente pueden surgir complicaciones neurológicas graves como meningitis o meningoencefalitis. Aunque la patogénesis del virus aún no se comprende completamente, estudios experimentales en modelos animales han demostrado el tropismo del virus por el sistema nervioso, hígado y bazo. El diagnóstico de la fiebre del OROV representa un desafío debido a su similitud con el cuadro clínico causado por otros arbovirus altamente prevalentes en la región, lo que resulta en una subestimación de su prevalencia. Actualmente, no hay tratamiento antiviral ni vacuna disponible para manejar la infección por el OROV. La prevención se centra en estrategias para el control de vectores. Dada la creciente propagación del OROV en los últimos años, en esta revisión se abordan aspectos fundamentales del virus, incluyendo la organización de su genoma, ciclo de transmisión, manifestaciones clínicas, patogénesis y diagnóstico.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract The Oropouche virus (OROV) is an emerging arbovirus with a high potential for spread. It causes numerous outbreaks of acute febrile illness in South and Central America. OROV circulates through jungle and urban cycles. In urban areas, the Culicoides paraensis mosquito is the main vector, with humans acting as the main host. In the majority of cases, OROV fever presents with mild symptoms; however, severe neurological complications, including meningitis and meningoencephalitis, may occasionally occur. Despite the lack of complete understanding regarding the virus' pathogenesis, experimental studies in animal models have demonstrated the virus' tropism for the nervous system, liver, and spleen. The diagnosis of OROV fever presents a challenge due to its similarity to the clinical picture caused by other highly prevalent arboviruses in the region, resulting in an underestimation of its prevalence. Currently, there is no antiviral treatment or vaccine available to manage OROV infection. Prevention focuses on vector control strategies. In light of the recent expansion of OROV, this review aims to elucidate the virus's fundamental aspects, including its genome organization, transmission cycle, clinical manifestations, pathogenesis, and diagnosis.]]></p></abstract>
