Partindo de um conjunto de 329 artigos, este estudo analisa em pormenor 39 destes, entre 1999 e 2014, contribuindo significativamente para o desenvolvimento do conhecimento e da compreensão da investigação feita até à data nesta área. Com esta análise, foram identificadas tendências e padrões, podendo concluir-se que a investigação feita sobre a internacionalização de pme centra-se nos Estados Unidos e no Canadá, influenciada sobretudo por quatro grandes tópicos: teorias da internacionalização, estratégia, desempenho e perspetiva internacional. Conclui-se igualmente que há uma predominância quantitativa. As conclusões e interpretações sobre oportunidades para futuras investigações são de relevância tanto para a comunidade académica como para a empresarial. <abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[RESUMEN: Dado el gran interés de la comunidad académica y el mundo empresarial sobre la internacionalización de las pequeñas y medianas empresas (pymes), esta investigación tiene como objetivo revisar la literatura empírica sobre la internacionalización de las pymes en el continente americano, a partir de las principales bases de datos académicas. Partiendo de un conjunto de 329 artículos, este estudio examina en detalle 39 artículos entre 1999 y 2014, lo que contribuye significativamente al desarrollo del conocimiento y la comprensión de la investigación realizada hasta la fecha en este ámbito. Con este análisis se han identificado tendencias y patrones, y se concluye que la investigación realizada sobre la internacionalización de pymes se centra en los EE. UU. y Canadá, influenciada principalmente en cuatro temas principales: las teorías de la internacionalización, estrategia, desempeño y perspectiva internacional. Igualmente, se concluye que las investigaciones han seguido un predominio cuantitativo. Las conclusiones e interpretaciones de oportunidades para futuras investigaciones son relevantes tanto para la comunidad académica como para el mundo empresarial. <abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[ABSTRACT: Considering the pressing interest of the academic community and the business world over the internationalization of Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMES), this research is aimed to review the empirical literature about SMES' internationalization processes in the American continent, according to information included in the main academic databases. This study makes an in-depth analysis of 39 papers (out of a group of 329) published between 1999 and 2014, contributing to the construction of knowledge and the understanding of research in this field. This work allowed identifying patterns and trends, as well as concluding that SMES' internationalization research is USA-and-Canada-centered and is largely influenced by four main topics: internationalization theories, strategy, performance and international perspectives. According to the results, it is also concluded that research studies have mainly followed a quantitative approach. Sur la base d'un ensemble de 329 articles, cette étude examine en détail 39 articles publiés entre 1999 et 2014, ce qui contribue de manière significative au développement des connaissances et à la compréhension des recherches menées à ce jour dans ce domaine.
