On November 16th, 2020, the hurricane Iota passed ~10 km north of the islands of Providencia and Santa Catalina with sustained winds of a category 5 hurricane. The purpose of this study was to document the magnitude of the impact on coral reefs around the islands two weeks after the hit, as part of the &#8220;Operación Cangrejo Negro&#8221;. Visual assessments were performed at 11 representative coral reef formations between 2 and 17 m depth. Estimates of the impact were evaluated within an approximate area of 200 m2, which was categorized with score values ranging from 0 to 5 according to the level of damage. Preliminary estimates at coral reef formations indicated impact in 72 % of the stations surveyed, concentrated mainly on shallow areas (5-7 m). Approximately 45 % of the sites had low to low-medium damage and 27 % showed medium to moderate damage with high variability between and within stations. From this preliminary assessment we conclude that the impact was widespread along the island on shallow areas structured by big boulders of Orbicella spp., mainly related to colony-level damage with less reef structural damage.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[RESUMEN Los huracanes son importantes fuerzas destructivas en arrecifes coralinos que pueden cambiar el componente estructural del hábitat. El 16 de noviembre de 2020 el huracán Iota pasó ~10 km al norte de las islas de Providencia y Santa Catalina como huracán categoría 5. Este estudio documentó la magnitud del impacto en arrecifes coralinos alrededor de las islas dos semanas después del impacto, como parte de la &#8220;Operación Cangrejo Negro&#8221;. Se realizaron evaluaciones visuales rápidas en 11 formaciones coralinas entre 2 y 17 m de profundidad. Se estimó la proporción del impacto en un área de ~200 m2, la cual fue categorizada con valores de 0-5 según el nivel de daño. Estimaciones preliminares indicaron impacto en 72 % de las estaciones evaluadas, concentrado principalmente en áreas someras (5-7 m). Aproximadamente el 45 % de los sitios presentaron daños de bajo a medio y 27 % presentaron daños de medio a moderado con una alta variabilidad entre y dentro de las estaciones. De esta evaluación se concluye que el impacto se extendió a lo largo de la isla en áreas someras estructuradas por grandes colonias de Orbicella spp., principalmente relacionados con daños a nivel de colonia y daños menores a nivel de estructura del arrecife.]]></p></abstract>
