In the Colombian Caribbean, the Magdalena and Sinú rivers introduce large quantities of sediments containing traces of multiple pollutants - including metals. This research aims to determine the metal contamination levels of marine sediments in two sectors of the Colombian Caribbean that are influenced by the Magdalena and Sinú Rivers. Sediments were collected using a dredge, and the concentration of metals was analyzed through atomic absorption spectrometry. In addition, granulometry analyses and organic matter determination were performed. The area of influence of the Sinú exhibited the highest concentrations of potentially toxic metals in sediments in both the dry and rainy seasons. The metals that reported the highest average concentrations (µg/g) were Cd (0.78), As (13.97), Cr (114.72), Cu (63.9), and Ni (58.18). Based on the results of this study, it can be stated that the sediments in the areas of influence of the Sinú and Magdalena Rivers exhibit concentrations of some metals above the reference values proposed by NOAA.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[RESUMEN Los metales son contaminantes liberados al ambiente por fuentes antropogénicas y naturales, y pueden llegar a los ecosistemas marinos y costeros mediante descarga fluvial y procesos atmosféricos. En el Caribe colombiano, los ríos Magdalena y Sinú aportan grandes cantidades de sedimentos que contienen trazas de múltiples contaminantes, entre estos metales. En esta investigación se pretende determinar los niveles de contaminación por metales en los sedimentos marinos de dos sectores del Caribe colombiano influenciados por los ríos Magdalena y Sinú. Se colectaron sedimentos usando una draga, y la concentración de metales fue analizada por medio de espectrometría de absorción atómica. Además, se realizó análisis de granulometría y determinación de materia orgánica. El área de influencia del Sinú presentó las mayores concentraciones de metales potencialmente tóxicos en los sedimentos, tanto en la época seca como en la lluviosa. Los metales que presentaron las concentraciones promedio (µg/g) más altas fueron Cd (0.78), As (13.97), Cr (114.72), Cu (63.9) y Ni (58.18). Con base en los resultados de este estudio se puede afirmar que los sedimentos de las áreas de influencia de los ríos Sinú y Magdalena presentan concentraciones de algunos metales por encima de los valores de referencia propuestos por la NOAA.]]></p></abstract>
