However, microplastic (MPs) pollution patterns in the Caribbean Sea and Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) are poorly studied. The aim of the study was to analyze the abundance, distribution, depth, seasonality, and potential sources of microplastics in the Rosario and San Bernardo Archipelago MPA, located in the Colombian Caribbean. Sampling was conducted at coastal and oceanic stations using Manta and Mini-bongo nets to collect microplastics in surface and subsurface waters during contrasting seasons in 2022. Results showed the highest abundances during the rainy season due to the influence of the Magdalena River in the area, while microplastics during the dry season were associated with the Panama-Colombia Gyre. Subsurface waters contained smaller microplastics than surface water, these results increasing the risk of ingestion by marine organisms. The occurrence of microplastics were mostly fibers and fragments identified as polyester-cotton, PET, polypropylene. These findings underscore the role of regional oceanographic and anthropogenic factors in microplastic distribution, highlighting the urgent need for systematic monitoring and development of regional policies for MPAs in the southern Caribbean.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[RESUMEN La contaminación por microplásticos (MPs) es un problema ambiental globalmente reconocido, especialmente en ecosistemas marinos. Sin embargo, los patrones de contaminación por MPs en el mar Caribe y en las Áreas Marinas Protegidas (AMP) siguen estando pobremente documentados. El objetivo de este estudio fue analizar la abundancia, distribución, profundidad, estacionalidad y fuentes potenciales de microplásticos en el AMP del Archipiélago del Rosario y San Bernardo, en el Caribe colombiano. El muestreo se realizó en estaciones costeras y oceánicas utilizando redes Manta y Mini-bongo para recolectar microplásticos en aguas superficiales y subsuperficiales durante temporadas contrastantes en 2022. Los resultados mostraron las mayores abundancias durante la temporada de lluvias debido a la influencia del río Magdalena en el área, mientras que durante la temporada seca los MPs se asociaron con el giro ciclónico Panamá-Colombia. Las aguas subsuperficiales contuvieron MPs de menor tamaño que las superficiales, incrementando el riesgo de ingestión por parte de organismos marinos. Los MPs se compusieron principalmente de fibras y fragmentos identificados como mezclas poliéster-algodón, PET y polipropileno. Estos hallazgos subrayan el papel de los factores oceanográficos regionales y antropogénicos en la distribución de los microplásticos, y destacan la necesidad de monitoreo sistemático y de políticas regionales para las AMP del sur del Caribe.]]></p></abstract>
