El conocimiento sobre la historia natural de la especie proviene principalmente de Argentina y Brasil; sin embargo, acerca de Sicalis flaveola flaveola distribuida en Colombia y Venezuela sólo se conocen algunos registros de tamaño de nidada. Entre enero de 2013 y mayo de 2015 se estudió la biología reproductiva de S. f. flaveola en el campus de Meléndez en la Universidad del Valle, Cali, Colombia. Se instalaron 94 cajas nido para propiciar mayor recurso de anidamiento y se hicieron cuatro recorridos semanales en busca de nidos activos y revisión de cajas nido. El tamaño de postura fue de 3,46 huevos, el promedio de polluelos que nacen es de tres con una proporción de sexo 1:1. La incubación estuvo a cargo de la hembra mientras el cuidado de los polluelos fue efectuado por ambos miembros de la pareja. El éxito reproductivo de la especie al momento de abandonar el nido fue de 65,8%. Se encontraron diferencias con las subespecies de las latitudes del sur de Suramérica, con un menor rango de tamaño de postura y con períodos más largos de incubación y permanencia de polluelos en el nido. Sin embargo, en aspectos como el cuidado paternal durante la incubación y el cubrimiento de los polluelos, son similares.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract The Saffron Finch (Sicalis flaveola) is a mainly grain-eating species adapted to open habitats and a secondary cavity nester that also uses abandoned nests from other species. Knowledge about the natural history of the species comes mainly from Argentina and Brazil. However, only some data on the clutch size of S. f. flaveola distributed in Colombia and Venezuela were available. The reproductive biology of S. f. flaveola was conducted on the Meléndez Campus of Universidad del Valle in Cali, Colombia, between January 2013 and May 2015. Ninety-four nesting boxes were installed to provide additional nesting resource and four transects were done weekly in search of active nests and checking the nest boxes. Clutch size was 3.46 eggs, hatched chick average was three and gender proportion was 1:1. Incubation was carried out by the female while caring for the chicks was done by the couple. The reproductive success of the species at the moment of leaving the nest was 65.8%. Differences were found with the subspecies of southern latitudes of South America with a smaller range of posture and longer incubation and nesting stay periods. However, in aspects such as parental care during incubation and nesting of the chicks, they were similar.]]></p></abstract>
