Argumentamos que ele é caracterizado por uma mistura de negatividade na descrição da opressão social e de positividade na essência redentora do popular. Sobre o primeiro, pode-se mencionar a exploração de Amado do mundo dos pobres, seu estilo coloquial e a descrição vívida da dominação capitalista; sobre o último, um investimento transcendente no povo, no heroi e no partido. A conclusão é que essa combinação gera uma mitologia brasileira que ajuda a explicar a virada de Jorge Amado em sua escrita pós-comunista.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[Resumen En este artículo, interpretamos las primeras novelas de Jorge Amado como un ejemplo privilegiado del realismo socialista brasileño. Argumentamos que este se caracteriza por una combinación de negatividad en la descripción de la opresión social y de positividad en la esencia redentora de lo popular. Sobre lo primero, se puede mencionar la exploración que Amado hace del mundo de los pobres, su estilo coloquial y la descripción vivida del dominio capitalista; sobre lo último, la apuesta trascendente por el pueblo, el héroe y el partido. La conclusión es que esa combinación genera una mitología brasileña que ayuda a explicar el giro de Jorge Amado en sus escritos poscomunistas.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract In this article we interpret Jorge Amado's early work as a privileged example of Brazilian socialist realism. We argue that it is characterized by a mixture of negativity in the description of social oppression and positivity in the redeeming essence of the popular. To explain the former,we discuss Amado's exploration of the world of the poor, his colloquial style, and vivid depiction of capitalist domination; as for the latter, we approach a transcendent investment in the people, the hero, and the party. The concluding claim is that this combination generates a Brazilian mythology that helps to account for Amado's turn in his post-communist writing.]]></p></abstract>
