El xilitol es un alcohol de 5 carbonos derivado de la D-xilosa cuyo mecanismo de acción es inhibir el crecimiento bacteriano, principalmente de Streptococcus mutans en la saliva y la biopelícula además de mejorar el flujo salivar y otros efectos como evitar la inflamación gingival, disminuir el efecto adherente de microorganismos (proporcionando una protección contra enfermedades del periodonto) e impedir la desmineralización del esmalte, ya que reduce la producción de ácido. Esta investigación viabiliza el uso del xilitol en la salud bucal y tiene como propósito impulsar nuevos proyectos de aplicación en el campo de prevención y tratamiento de alteraciones bucales para proponer usos reales e innovadores en algunas poblaciones que hemos titulado como poblaciones "PEPE" (Poblaciones Especiales Para el Periodonto): niños discapacitados, soldados en campaña, mujeres en gestación, indígenas, pueblo ROM (romaníes), pacientes con xerostomía (bien sea por patologías reumatoides o por quimioterapia), entre otras. Se propone el uso del xilitol, para el mejoramiento de su salud bucal promoviendo el uso de la goma de mascar como vehículo.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Dental caries and periodontal disease are a constant problem that demands a lot of resources but which is still attacking the population every day. Therefore new possibilities for prevention and treatment complementary should be explored to the existing ones. Xylitol is a 5-carbon alcohol derived from the D-xylose whose mechanism of action is to inhibit the growth of bacteria, mainly Streptococcus mutans found in saliva and biofilm. Besides, it also improves the flow of saliva, prevents the gingival inflammation, reduces adherence of the microorganism (providing protection against periodontal disease) and prevents enamel demineralization reducing acid production. This research makes viable the use of xylitol on oral health and aims to promote new application projects in the field of prevention and treatment of oral alterations. This research also proposes innovative uses in some kind of populations called "PEPE" ("Poblaciones Especiales para el Periodonto" or periodontium special populations) such as disabled children, soldiers in the field, pregnant women, indigenous people, ROM people (Gypsies), patients with xerostomia (either for rheumatoid diseases or chemotherapy), among others. It is proposed that the use of xylitol improves oral health by promoting the use of chewing gum as a vehicle.]]></p></abstract>

El xilitol es un alcohol de 5 carbonos derivado de la D-xilosa cuyo mecanismo de acci&oacute;n es inhibir el crecimiento bacteriano, principalmente de Streptococcus mutans en la saliva y la biopel&iacute;cula adem&aacute;s de mejorar el flujo salivar y otros efectos como evitar la inflamaci&oacute;n gingival, disminuir el efecto adherente de microorganismos (proporcionando una protecci&oacute;n contra enfermedades del periodonto) e impedir la desmineralizaci&oacute;n del esmalte, ya que reduce la producci&oacute;n de &aacute;cido. (Source: MeSH, NLM)</p>  <hr>    <br>      <p align="center"><font size="3"><b>INTRODUCCI&Oacute;N</b></font></p>      <p>La caries dental definida por la Organizaci&oacute;n Mundial de la Salud (OMS)<sub>1</sub> es un proceso localizado de origen multifactorial que se inicia despu&eacute;s de la erupci&oacute;n dentaria, causando el reblandecimiento de la estructura dental y evolucionando hasta la formaci&oacute;n de una cavidad; es descrita tambi&eacute;n como una enfermedad infectocontagiosa asociada a la fermentaci&oacute;n de az&uacute;cares por parte de las bacterias pat&oacute;genas presentes, donde juega un rol fundamental <i>Streptococcus mutans</i>, microorganismo Gram positivo que representa una proporci&oacute;n de la flora bucal con capacidad de colonizar la superficie del diente y producir desmineralizaci&oacute;n por &aacute;cido l&aacute;ctico que lleva a la formaci&oacute;n de cavidad; los microorganismos implicados en la caries dental humana incluyen tambi&eacute;n <i>Lactobacillus spp</i>. y <i>S. sobrinus</i> entre otra gama de especies con alta variabilidad individual. Esta enfermedad adem&aacute;s, proporciona a la placa dental polisac&aacute;ridos de los restos alimenticios, productos extracelulares como los glucanos y c&eacute;lulas descamadas provenientes de las enc&iacute;as.<sub>2-5</sub></p>      ]]></body>
<body><![CDATA[<p>Seg&uacute;n diagn&oacute;sticos realizados en Chile entre el a&ntilde;o 1996 y 1999, la caries dental afecta al 85&#37; de su poblaci&oacute;n infantil y aunque en las &uacute;ltimas d&eacute;cadas a nivel mundial se ha observado una notable disminuci&oacute;n de los &iacute;ndices de esta enfermedad, siguen existiendo poblaciones en alto riesgo de padecerla por factores como son: el estado de salud del hospedero, las caracter&iacute;sticas de la dieta y una pobre calidad en las medidas preventivas que en salud p&uacute;blica se proponen<sub>6</sub> generando consigo un gran impacto en la calidad de vida que afecta especialmente a las comunidades de bajos recursos, las minor&iacute;as &eacute;tnicas, los nativos americanos y las poblaciones nativas de Alaska.<sub>7</sub> Seg&uacute;n Marsh y Martin, "el n&uacute;mero de dientes cariados, ausentes y restaurados en los ni&ntilde;os de 12 a&ntilde;os en Tailandia fue de 0,4 en 1960 y de 1,6 en 2000 y 2001...am&eacute;n de haberse encontrado que tres cuartas partes de los adultos en algunas partes del mundo en desarrollo sufre de enfermedad periodontal".<sub>8</sub></p>      <p>La biopel&iacute;cula (biofilm) dental es una agregaci&oacute;n de comunidades de microorganismos adheridas a la superficie dental; las diferentes bacterias  contenidas en la biopel&iacute;cula responden a las condiciones de sus microambientes espec&iacute;ficos y es as&iacute; como &eacute;sta se convierte en un factor determinante para el inicio de un proceso carioso, como tambi&eacute;n de gingivitis o periodontitis.<sub>9,10</sub> La remoci&oacute;n de la biopel&iacute;cula bacteriana es un componente decisivo en la prevenci&oacute;n y el tratamiento de estas enfermedades con alto nivel de incidencia mundial.<sub>11,12</sub></p>      <p>La salud de la cavidad oral debe ser una condici&oacute;n inseparable de la salud general del hombre, donde una inadecuada dieta, rica en carbohidratos, trae consecuencias a los tejidos orales, periodontales, dientes, mucosas y gl&aacute;ndulas salivares, pues son estos los primeros en reaccionar y recibir los alimentos; el correcto cuidado y mantenimiento de &eacute;sta asegura un estado saludable tanto sist&eacute;mica como psicol&oacute;gicamente, tal y como lo aseguran algunos m&eacute;dicos y dietistas.<sub>13,14</sub></p>      <p>En la odontolog&iacute;a del siglo XXI, las acciones preventivas con el uso de la goma de mascar como veh&iacute;culo representa una alternativa nueva en la categor&iacute;a de productos que tiene la capacidad de proveer componentes terap&eacute;uticos y sustancias activas como fluoruros, clorhexidina, penicilina, nicotina, fosfop&eacute;ptido amorfo de fosfato de calcio (Recaldent&reg;), trimetafosfato de sodio y xilitol principalmente.<sub>15</sub> El xilitol en la actualidad, est&aacute; disponible en gomas, mentas, pastillas masticables, dent&iacute;fricos, enjuagues bucales y jarabes para la tos.<sub>16-18</sub></p>      <p>El prop&oacute;sito de este art&iacute;culo es analizar la evidencia cient&iacute;fica para proponer usos reales e innovadores en algunas poblaciones vulnerables identificadas como Especiales para el Periodonto "PEPE", V.gr. ni&ntilde;os discapacitados, soldados en campa&ntilde;a, mujeres en gestaci&oacute;n, ind&iacute;genas, pueblo ROM, pacientes con xerostom&iacute;a (bien sea por patolog&iacute;as reumatoides o por quimioterapia), etc., para el mantenimiento y mejoramiento de su salud bucal usando por ejemplo como veh&iacute;culo la goma de mascar en casos seleccionados.</p>    <br>      <p align="center"><font size="3"><b>MATERIALES Y M&Eacute;TODOS</b></font></p>      <p>Este art&iacute;culo es una revisi&oacute;n de literatura, descriptiva y documental, que utiliza la b&uacute;squeda de informaci&oacute;n cient&iacute;fica, el ordenamiento y estudio anal&iacute;tico del xilitol y la prevenci&oacute;n de la caries dental. Las fuentes utilizadas son la biblioteca de la Fundaci&oacute;n Universitaria Aut&oacute;noma de las Am&eacute;ricas y la biblioteca electr&oacute;nica de la Universidad Complutense de Madrid Espa&ntilde;a, herramientas como EBSCO y Pubmed. Las palabras claves utilizadas son: "xilitol", "caries" y "prevenci&oacute;n". Se recogi&oacute; la informaci&oacute;n a trav&eacute;s de fichas bibliogr&aacute;ficas para luego contextualizar, discutir, analizar y emitir las conclusiones.</p>    <br>      <p align="center"><font size="3"><b>RESULTADOS Y DISCUSI&Oacute;N</b></font></p>      ]]></body>
<body><![CDATA[<p>El xilitol es un alcohol de 5 carbonos derivado de la D-xilosa y naturalmente hallado en frutas como la frambuesa y la cereza.<sub>19-21</sub> Inicialmente el uso que se le dio fue como edulcorante en personas diab&eacute;ticas para mejorar el gusto de los alimentos sin aumentar el consumo de glucosa dietario. Fue provechoso adem&aacute;s en la terapia de infusi&oacute;n para el post-operatorio en quemaduras y para pacientes con shock.<sub>22-25</sub></p>      <p>En 1957 se intent&oacute; obtener esta sustancia a bajo costo pero no pudo lograrse este objetivo, sin embargo progresivamente se ha venido desarrollando diversos m&eacute;todos industriales que permiten m&aacute;s f&aacute;cilmente su disponibilidad.<sub>26-29</sub> Continuos estudios acerca del tema llevaron a observar que el xilitol tiene un sinn&uacute;mero de beneficios en la lucha contra las bacterias generadoras de enfermedades dentro de las cuales se listan otitis media, caries dental, infecciones intestinales y enfermedades del periodonto.<sub>30</sub></p>      <p>De acuerdo con la Agencia Nacional de Vigilancia Sanitaria (ANVISA) de Brasil,<sub>31</sub> el xilitol es un aditivo alimentario de tipo humectante que puede ser impregnado en la  cantidad necesaria para as&iacute; producir efectos deseados en el organismo.<sub>32</sub> El mecanismo de acci&oacute;n del xilitol sobre <i>Streptoccoccus mutans</i> no se conoce totalmente pero varios estudios afirman que act&uacute;a inhibiendo el crecimiento del microorganismo en la saliva y en la placa, bas&aacute;ndose en el establecimiento de un ciclo est&eacute;ril de consumo de energ&iacute;a intracelular que rompe la cadena energ&eacute;tica del fosfato e inhibiendo <i>in vitro</i> la producci&oacute;n de polisac&aacute;ridos de las cepas mencionadas.<sub>33-37</sub> Adem&aacute;s no s&oacute;lo es eficaz para <i>Streptoccocus mutans</i> sino tambi&eacute;n para <i>Streptoccocus sanguis</i> y <i>Streptoccocus salivaris</i>, quienes en boca, buscan alimentarse e incorporan el xilitol, no siendo degradado por ellos. No se han encontrado resultados similares con <i>Lactobacillus spp</i>, (bacterias secundarias en la formaci&oacute;n de la biopel&iacute;cula),<sub>38-40</sub> ni con las cepas de <i>Actinomyces</i>, <i>V. dispar</i> y <i>F. nucleatum</i>, que no fueron inhibidas por el xilitol.<sub>41</sub></p>      <p>Entre otras acciones protectoras, el xilitol controla la acumulaci&oacute;n de biopel&iacute;cula en las superficies dentales evitando as&iacute; la inflamaci&oacute;n gingival; disminuye el efecto adherente de los microorganismos proporcionando una protecci&oacute;n contra enfermedades del periodonto e impide adem&aacute;s la desmineralizaci&oacute;n del esmalte, ya que reduce la producci&oacute;n de &aacute;cido por su efecto inhibitorio directo sobre las bacterias implicadas.<sub>42,43</sub> Est&aacute; demostrado que el efecto anticaries del xilitol tiene una duraci&oacute;n de varios a&ntilde;os despu&eacute;s de la pr&aacute;ctica de consumirse diariamente.<sub>44</sub> En estudios realizados en Finlandia, se propone que la ingesta a largo plazo de xilitol suprime la acumulaci&oacute;n de grasa visceral, el aumento de la insulina plasm&aacute;tica y las concentraciones de l&iacute;pidos en ratas alimentadas con una dieta alta en grasas, adem&aacute;s la ingesta de xilitol reduce la hiperglucemia posprandial.<sub>45,46</sub> Por otro lado, al ingerir esta sustancia se previene la aparici&oacute;n o progresi&oacute;n de la Diabetes tipo II, lo que llev&oacute; a los investigadores a afirmar que el xilitol puede ser &uacute;til en el control y prevenci&oacute;n de la obesidad en los humanos, la diabetes y dem&aacute;s trastornos metab&oacute;licos. Consecuentemente, el consumo de xilitol mejora la absorci&oacute;n de calcio y previene la osteoporosis.<sub>47</sub></p>      <p>El xilitol tambi&eacute;n ha sido comparado con sustancias de uso diario para el odont&oacute;logo en su pr&aacute;ctica cl&iacute;nica como la clorhexidina, el fluoruro y otros alcoholes derivados como el sorbitol y el manitol mostrando resultados beneficiosos, pues tienen un sabor similar al xilitol, ayudan en la reducci&oacute;n de la formaci&oacute;n de placa bacteriana y en ausencia de una normal higiene bucal inhiben el desarrollo de la gingivitis (usando como par&aacute;metros de evaluaci&oacute;n la cantidad de &eacute;sta presente en 6 sitios por diente, evidencia por medio de soluci&oacute;n reveladora y registrada en el &iacute;ndice de placa modificado por Turesky-Gilmore- Glickman) tanto en forma individual como asociado a las otras mol&eacute;culas.<sub>48-50</sub> Por ejemplo si utilizamos una combinaci&oacute;n de clorhexidina m&aacute;s xilitol, se ampl&iacute;a el espectro antibi&oacute;tico, gracias a un efecto sin&eacute;rgico y al agregarle xilitol a la crema dental con fluoruro en comparaci&oacute;n con el habitual fluoruro de sodio, se encontr&oacute; mayor substantividad y duraci&oacute;n del efecto en el primero (aunque al mezclar xilitol con sorbitol, su efecto fue menor al del xilitol s&oacute;lo).<sub>51-53</sub> Al comparar el manitol con el xilitol, este primero no mostr&oacute; efectos adicionales a los descritos por el xilitol; el xilitol <i>per se</i> ha mostrado actividad antibi&oacute;tica con efectos secundarios m&iacute;nimos.<sub>54</sub></p>      <p>Es de gran inter&eacute;s el experimento realizado por Greyl y Kinkel en el cual enjuagando con una soluci&oacute;n de xilitol despu&eacute;s de las comidas con contenido alto de sacarosa disminuye la cariogenicidad de la dieta.<sub>55</sub> El grupo que recibi&oacute; cinco veces al d&iacute;a la goma de mascar con xilitol obtuvo niveles significativamente m&aacute;s bajos de sacarosa y de &aacute;cido si&aacute;lico libre en saliva, comparado con los niveles observados al inicio del estudio; adem&aacute;s disminuyeron significativamente las puntuaciones del &iacute;ndice de placa con el uso de xilitol.<sub>56</sub></p>      <p>Otro estudio mostr&oacute; que si durante 60 d&iacute;as se administraban tabletas de xilitol a pacientes con retraso mental, los tejidos gingivales no presentaban signos de inflamaci&oacute;n ni acumulaci&oacute;n de placa; las madres de estos pacientes notaron adem&aacute;s una disminuci&oacute;n en la halitosis de sus hijos. El uso de xilitol por lo tanto, se puede recomendar en estos casos, especialmente si el personal de cuidado de este tipo de pacientes no tiene la posibilidad de supervisar su cepillado.<sub>57</sub></p>      <p>Un estudio reciente encontr&oacute; que el jarabe de xilitol administrado por v&iacute;a t&oacute;pica o por v&iacute;a oral, dos o tres veces por d&iacute;a en una dosis total de 8 gramos, era eficaz en la prevenci&oacute;n de la caries de la primera infancia hasta en un 70&#37; de los dientes cariados durante la erupci&oacute;n de estos.<sub>58</sub> El xilitol tiene buena evidencia de influir beneficiosamente sobre la ecolog&iacute;a bucal, con el valor agregado de que si es utilizado en goma de mascar, estimula el fluido salival, aumentando las concentraciones de iones de calcio, estimulando la remineralizaci&oacute;n del diente, debido a que el pH de la placa no disminuye y se genera un efecto protector sobre el mismo.<sub>59-61</sub></p>      <p>El costo del xilitol es relativamente alto en comparaci&oacute;n con los productos sin az&uacute;car, pero establece una mejor relaci&oacute;n costobeneficio comparado con tratamientos de lesiones cariosas.<sub>62,63</sub> En el a&ntilde;o 2005 Castillo y colaboradores a&ntilde;adieron xilitol a la leche en un estudio experimental con el objetivo de encontrar alg&uacute;n sabor o sensaci&oacute;n diferente dentro de &eacute;sta; los resultados mostraron una mayor aceptaci&oacute;n a los alimentos endulzados con esta sustancia.<sub>64</sub> En mujeres embarazadas se comprob&oacute; que con el uso del xilitol disminuye el riesgo de enfermedad periodontal, al igual que el n&uacute;mero de <i>Streptococcus mutans</i> y que en sus hijos, cuando los dientes deciduos empiezan a erupcionar (con las madres siguiendo el tratamiento de goma de mascar con xilitol), se observa un n&uacute;mero inferior de microorganismos  cariog&eacute;nicos hasta los 6 a&ntilde;os de edad, siendo as&iacute; mismo significativamente mejor en la pr&aacute;ctica cl&iacute;nica comparado con la aplicaci&oacute;n de barnices de fl&uacute;or y clorhexidina para la prevenci&oacute;n de la caries, estos mismos resultados se obtuvieron cuando se compararon con aquellas madres que desistieron del tratamiento.<sub>65-69</sub></p>      <p>El xilitol en concentraciones mayores al 1&#37; genera un efecto ben&eacute;fico en la prevenci&oacute;n contra la otitis media aguda.<sub>70-73</sub> Sobre las bacterias que se encuentran en esta zona (<i>Streptoccocus pneumoniea</i>) y en la nasofaringe puede reducir el transporte de este pat&oacute;geno y por tanto tener significado cl&iacute;nico en la prevenci&oacute;n de la enfermedad del neumococo.<sub>74-76</sub></p>      ]]></body>
<body><![CDATA[<p>El xilitol se compar&oacute; a su vez, con sustancias naturales como el prop&oacute;leo, y el eritritol para analizar la efectividad de cada uno y establecer acciones de unos y otros.<sub>77,78</sub> Se encontr&oacute; que tanto el prop&oacute;leo como el xilitol en goma de mascar presentan igual efecto gracias a sus propiedades antimicrobianas, bacteriost&aacute;ticas y bactericidas, teniendo el prop&oacute;leo adem&aacute;s una acci&oacute;n antibi&oacute;tica, analg&eacute;sica, antioxidante, anest&eacute;sica, antiinflamatoria y regeneradora a nivel de cavidad oral en la prevenci&oacute;n de caries, pero este segundo no tiene efecto en ninguna otra parte del cuerpo como si la tiene el xilitol. De acuerdo con la literatura, el xilitol es bien tolerado, cuando se ingiere en dosis espaciadas de m&aacute;ximo 20 gramos cada una. En dosis superiores se describieron algunos efectos secundarios como por ejemplo un efecto laxante, produciendo dolores abdominales y diarrea (dosis tan altas como 60 a 100 gramos diarios).<sub>79,80</sub> Se debe procurar suministrar en goma de mascar y en peque&ntilde;as cantidades.<sub>81</sub> Cuando es aplicado parenteralmente puede causar hiperuricemia m&iacute;nimamente, pero sin consecuencias fisiopatol&oacute;gicas con casos de oxalosis renal cerebral con insuficiencia renal.<sub>82</sub> Por otro lado el uso prolongado de xilitol parece generar una cepa de <i>S. mutans</i> resistente a  &eacute;ste. Sus efectos de larga duraci&oacute;n han sido demostrados hasta 5 a&ntilde;os, despu&eacute;s de 2 a&ntilde;os de utilizar goma de mascar con xilitol.<sub>83</sub></p>      <p>Se afirma que existe un efecto similar a los antibi&oacute;ticos de tipo aminoglic&oacute;sidos.<sub>84</sub> En un estudio realizado en perros, se encontr&oacute; que el xilitol provoc&oacute; un aumento de alanina y aspartato aminotransferasa y en un estudio experimental en gatos, donde se a&ntilde;adi&oacute; xilitol al agua, se demostr&oacute; que los felinos que beb&iacute;an esta agua tratada, ten&iacute;an aproximadamente la mitad de placa y acumulaci&oacute;n de sarro que los que inger&iacute;an agua no tratada.<sub>85,86</sub> Actualmente el xilitol es encontrado en el mercado en presentaci&oacute;n de jarabe, goma de mascar, menta, pastillas masticables, enjuagues bucales y cremas dentales.</p>      <p>El xilitol tambi&eacute;n se compar&oacute; con agentes como los barnices de fluoruro, vacunas de reemplazo de bacterias y selladores oclusales, concluy&eacute;ndose que este es un tratamiento innovador en la prevenci&oacute;n de caries dental y que se muestra seguro ante el p&uacute;blico, pero que sin embargo se necesitan m&aacute;s estudios pertinentes a su formulaci&oacute;n y utilizaci&oacute;n, pues ser&iacute;a de gran importancia su uso dentro de la pr&aacute;ctica cl&iacute;nica asociada a la educaci&oacute;n en salud y el uso del fl&uacute;or.<sub>87</sub> Se ha demostrado que el efecto anticaries del xilitol tiene una duraci&oacute;n de varios a&ntilde;os despu&eacute;s de la pr&aacute;ctica de consumirse diariamente.<sub>88</sub></p>      <p>Las dosis sugeridas de xilitol son de 5 a 6 gramos por 3 veces al d&iacute;a para lograr un efecto cl&iacute;nico.<sub>89</sub> Al mismo tiempo, hay pruebas contradictorias en la literatura de los estudios en dent&iacute;fricos con xilitol, fl&uacute;or y triclos&aacute;n que proponen que las dosis m&aacute;s bajas y las exposiciones menos frecuentes podr&iacute;an ser efectivas y que los efectos sin&eacute;rgicos de xilitol, fl&uacute;or y triclos&aacute;n no se pueden descartar.<sub>90</sub> Otras fuentes afirman que un 5&#37; que se agregue al dent&iacute;frico fluorado es m&aacute;s beneficioso contra la erosi&oacute;n y la abrasi&oacute;n del esmalte que el mismo sin xilitol.<sub>91</sub></p>      <p>Aunque la evidencia cl&iacute;nica sustenta los beneficios del xilitol como agente capaz de reducir los &iacute;ndices de ceo y COP e inhibir la reproducci&oacute;n del principal microorganismo promotor de la caries <i>Streptococcus mutans</i> entre otros beneficios; se recomienda que se establezcan protocolos para su buen uso y se busque un mayor impacto con un medio de distribuci&oacute;n m&aacute;s eficaz e informaci&oacute;n sobre su "beneficio" para mantener una buena salud bucal.<sub>92,93</sub> Es importante recordar que la ingesta diaria y varias veces al d&iacute;a de xilitol no sustituye la correcta higiene oral de los individuos, sino que es considerado como un complemento para el control de la caries dental, especialmente en los pa&iacute;ses en v&iacute;as de desarrollo con recursos limitados para la atenci&oacute;n dental.<sub>94</sub></p>      <p>En este estudio se han discutido los hallazgos m&aacute;s significativos evidenciando el papel del xilitol en el mantenimiento de la salud bucal. Se propone su uso innovador en veh&iacute;culos como la goma de mascar para prevenci&oacute;n y tratamiento complementario en las que hemos denominado poblaciones "PEPE" como por ejemplo ni&ntilde;os discapacitados, soldados en campa&ntilde;a, mujeres en gestaci&oacute;n, ind&iacute;genas, pueblo ROM y pacientes con xerostom&iacute;a (bien sea por patolog&iacute;as reumatoides, por quimioterapia u otros).</p>    <br>      <p align="center"><font size="3"><b>CONCLUSIONES</b></font></p>      <p>El xilitol es un alcohol de 5 carbonos derivado de la D-xilosa, anticariog&eacute;nico, no metabolizable por las bacterias y tiene propiedades beneficiosas para la salud, tanto bucal como sist&eacute;mica. Con su presentaci&oacute;n en goma de mascar es tambi&eacute;n un estimulante de la secreci&oacute;n salival, factor importante en el mantenimiento del pH bucal, adem&aacute;s de favorecer el barrido mec&aacute;nico de las superficies dentales.</p>      <p>Esta investigaci&oacute;n presenta el uso de xilitol en el mantenimiento y mejoramiento de la salud  bucal y propone nuevos proyectos en prevenci&oacute;n de caries y enfermedad periodontal, sobre todo innovadoramente (usando por ejemplo como veh&iacute;culo la goma de mascar en casos seleccionados) en poblaciones que se consideran especiales ("PEPE").</p>      ]]></body>
