<self-uri xlink:href="http://www.scielo.org.co/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&amp;pid=S0370-39082018000400422&amp;lng=en&amp;nrm=iso"></self-uri><self-uri xlink:href="http://www.scielo.org.co/scielo.php?script=sci_abstract&amp;pid=S0370-39082018000400422&amp;lng=en&amp;nrm=iso"></self-uri><self-uri xlink:href="http://www.scielo.org.co/scielo.php?script=sci_pdf&amp;pid=S0370-39082018000400422&amp;lng=en&amp;nrm=iso"></self-uri><abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[Resumen Se estudiaron los conjuntos de capas rojas del desierto de La Tatacoa, Huila, Colombia, con el fin de comprobar la presencia de paleosuelos en ellas y de establecer sus propiedades y variabilidad espacial, así como las condiciones ambientales bajo las cuales se formaron. Se comprobó la existencia de paleosuelos alcalinos en las capas rojas inferiores y en las ferruginosas con las siguientes características: horizontes iluviales Bt de color rojo, con estructura en bloques angulares, bajo contenido de materia orgánica, cútanes y espejos de falla (slickensides), que mostraban translocación de óxidos de hierro y manganeso y de carbonatos de calcio. Además, se observó una gran variabilidad espacial en el espesor y la posición de los paleosuelos con respecto a los lechos líticos. Los procesos pedogenéticos responsables de la evolución de los paleosuelos fueron la iluviación y la lixiviación de arcilla, la mineralización de la materia orgánica, la solodización, la rubefacción, la fersialitización, la carbonatación, el adensamiento y la erosión hídrica. Estos procesos indican que la pedogénesis se llevó a cabo en un clima estacional contrastado en humedad, con una época muy seca seguida de otra muy lluviosa. La presencia de paleosuelos intercalados con capas líticas de granulometría variable sin pedogénesis implica que en la región se presentó una inestabilidad importante en las condiciones climáticas y geomorfológicas durante la época en que se formaron los conjuntos de capas rojas en el desierto. Se concluyó que la liberación de hierro a partir de los minerales primarios y su difusión dentro de la matriz del material geológico, con su posterior oxidación, fue el mecanismo responsable del color dominante tanto de las capas rojas como de los paleosuelos del desierto de La Tatacoa.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract We studied the red layer assemblages of La Tatacoa desert in Huila, Colombia, in order to verify the presence of paleosols and to establish their properties and spatial variability, as well as the environmental conditions under which they were formed. We found alkaline paleosols in the lower red layers and in the ferruginous ones that had the following characteristics: illuvial horizons Bt of red color, with a structure in angular blocks, low content of organic matter, cutans and slickensides that showed translocation of iron and manganese oxides and calcium carbonates. In addition, there was a strong spatial variability in the thickness and the position of the paleosols with respect to the lithic beds. The pedogenetic processes responsible for the evolution of the paleosols were clay illuviation and lessivage, mineralization of organic matter, solodization, flushing, fersialitization, carbonation, aeration, and water erosion. These processes indicate that the pedogenesis occurred in a seasonal climate contrasted in humidity with a very dry season followed by another very rainy one. The presence of paleosols interspersed with lithic layers of variable granulometry without pedogenesis imply that there was significant instability in the climatic and geomorphological conditions in the region during the time when the sets of red layers in the desert were formed. We concluded that the release of iron from the primary minerals and their diffusion within the matrix of the geological material and its subsequent oxidation was the mechanism responsible for the dominant color of both the red layers and the paleosols of La Tatacoa desert.]]></p></abstract>
