Esta descripción parte de los primeros sismoscopios, que evolucionaron en sismómetros, y culmina con los sismógrafos, instrumentos que detectan y registran las señales sísmicas. En relación con estos últimos, se analiza cómo del sismógrafo mecánico se pasó al electrodinámico para llegar al sismógrafo moderno con registro digital. En la parte final del documento se plantea la necesidad de incluir los metadatos descriptivos de las redes sismológicas además de los datos registrados por las estaciones que la conforman. Se presentan los metadatos de las redes sismológicas que operan en la mayoría de los países de la región de Latinoamérica y del Caribe, desde el río Bravo en el norte de México hasta la punta más meridional de la Patagonia argentina. La recopilación de estos metadatos fue posible gracias a los aportes, valiosísimos y desinteresados, de muchos colegas que trabajan en dichas redes, a quienes los autores del presente trabajo expresan el mayor de los agradecimientos.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract In this paper, we made a brief description of the development of the instruments for the detection and recording of seismic signals considering some technical and historical aspects. We described the first seismoscopes, which evolved into seismometers and culminated with the seismographs designed for the detection and recording of seismic signals analyzing how the mechanical seismograph evolved into the electrodynamic to arrive at modern seismographs with digital registration. Finally, we explained the need to include the descriptive metadata of the seismological networks along with the data recorded by their stations. We present the metadata of the seismological networks operating in most of the Latin American and Caribbean countries from the Río Grande in northern México to the southernmost tip of Argentine's Patagonia. The compilation of the metadata was possible thanks to the valuable and selfless contributions of many of the colleagues working in these networks for which we express our gratitude.]]></p></abstract>
