The aim of this study was to evaluate the performance of nine eucalypt species planted with three different spacings under the environmental conditions of the tropical dry forest of the inter-Andean valleys of Colombia. A split-plot arrangement with two replicates was used as the experimental design. The planting spacing factor (three planting spacings) was assigned to the main plots and the species factor (nine eucalypt species) was assigned to the subplots. Survival and growth were evaluated at twenty-four months of age. The study identified the Brazilian provenances of Eucalyptus camaldulensis Dehnh, Eucalyptus urophylla S.T. Blake, Eucalyptus grandis W. Hill, and Eucalyptus pellita F. Muell. and the Colombian provenance of Eucalyptus pellita F. Muell. as promising for commercial reforestation programs in areas with a water deficit in the tropical dry forest. Planting spacings of 3x2 m (1666 stems-ha-1) and 3x2.5 m (1333 stemsha-1) maximized the production of basal area and the volume for the species evaluated. Finally, no interaction was detected between species and planting spacing factors, therefore, the species identified had a better performance regardless of the planting spacing used.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[Resumen El establecimiento de nuevas plantaciones forestales requiere la adopción de decisiones importantes, comenzando por la selección de las especies que se van a plantar, así como la elección de un espaciamiento de plantación adecuado para maximizar la producción de madera. El objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar el comportamiento de nueve especies de eucalipto plantadas en tres espaciamientos diferentes en las condiciones ambientales del bosque seco tropical de los valles interandinos de Colombia. Se utilizó un arreglo en parcelas divididas con dos repeticiones como diseño experimental. El factor de espaciamiento de siembra (tres espaciamientos) se asignó a las parcelas principales y el factor de especie (nueve especies de eucalipto) se asignó a las subparcelas. La supervivencia y el crecimiento se evaluaron a los veinticuatro meses de edad. Se identificaron las procedencias brasileñas de Eucalyptus camaldulensis Dehnh, Eucalyptus urophylla S.T. Blake, Eucalyptus grandis W. Hill y Eucalyptus pellita F. Muell. y la procedencia colombiana de Eucalyptus pellita F. Muell. como prometedoras para los programas comerciales de reforestación en áreas con déficit hídrico en el bosque seco tropical. Los espaciamientos de plantación de 3x2 m (1.666 árboles-ha-1) y 3x2,5 m (1.333 árboles-ha-1) maximizaron la producción de área basal y de volumen de las especies evaluadas. Por último, no se detectó interacción entre las especies y el espaciamiento de plantación, por lo tanto, las especies identificadas se desempeñaron mejor independientemente del espaciamiento de plantación usado.]]></p></abstract>
