Conocer la consistencia interna y la dimensionalidad de la escala de Rosenberg para evaluar la autoestima (ERA) en universitarios de Santa Marta, Colombia. Método. Se seleccionó una muestra de 1341 estudiantes, entre 18 y 30 años, de varios programas académicos, que diligenciaron la ERA. Los coeficientes alfa de Cronbach y omega de McDonald se calcularon para la confiabilidad, el coeficiente de Mosier, para medir unidimensionalidad, y los análisis factoriales exploratorios, para medir la dimensionalidad de la ERA. Resultados. En la escala se observó un alfa de Cronbach de 0.72, un omega de McDonald de 0.65 y un coeficiente de Mosier de 0.75. La ERA mostró dos dimensiones: (a) autoestima positiva, que explicó el 32.3% de la varianza, y (b) autoestima negativa, responsable del 13.8% de la varianza. Estas dimensiones presentaron baja correlación entre ellas. Conclusión. La ERA cuenta con dos dimensiones, autoestima positiva y autoestima negativa, que se comportan como escalas distintas.]]></p></abstract>

The objective of the research was to determine the internal consistency and dimensionality of the Rosenberg self-esteem scale (RSES) in college students from Santa Marta, Colombia. Method. A sample of 1.341 students was used in the application of the RSES. Students were aged between 18 and 30 years, mean = 20.6 years (SD = 3.4); 50.7% were males. Cronbach alpha and McDonald omega were computed to estimate reliability. Mosier's coefficient was calculated to measure the dimensionality. Exploratory factor analyses were conducted to observe the dimensionality of the RSES. Results. Cronbach alpha for RSES was 0.72; McDonald omega, 0.65; and Mosier coefficient, 0.75. The RSES showed two dimensions, 'positive self-esteem' that explained 32.3% of the variance; and 'negative self-esteem' which accounted for 13.8% of the variance. These dimensions showed a low correlation each other. Conclusion. The RSES is a scale with two dimensions, 'positive self-esteem' and 'negative self-esteem' which should be considered as separate scales.]]></p></abstract>

<body><![CDATA[<p><b><i>Palavras-chave: </i></b>Autoestima, estudantes, confiabilidade e validez, an&aacute;lise fatorial, estudos de valida&ccedil;&atilde;o.</p> <hr>     <p><font size="3"><b>Introducci&oacute;n</b></font></p>     <p>En psicolog&iacute;a, la palabra autoestima es un claro ejemplo de sinonimia o polisemia, tanto as&iacute; que no existe unanimidad en su definici&oacute;n y conceptualizaci&oacute;n (Gonz&aacute;lez, 1999; Montgomery y Goldbach, 2010; Valenzuela, 1993). Varias palabras se usan para definir el mismo concepto o la misma palabra cuenta con m&uacute;ltiples significados (Mart&iacute;n, 1990). Las palabras autoaceptaci&oacute;n, autoaprobaci&oacute;n, autoconcepto, autoeficacia, autoimagen, autorrespeto o autovaloraci&oacute;n se usan en ocasiones como sin&oacute;nimos para autoestima (Butler y Gasson, 2005; Montgomery y Goldbach, 2010; Polaino-Lorente, 2000).</p>     <p>Una de las primeras definiciones la propuso el psic&oacute;logo y fil&oacute;sofo William James (1989/1890), para quien la autoestima es un balance de los logros reales en relaci&oacute;n con las propias aspiraciones o metas ideales. Para otros autores, la autoestima guarda una mayor relaci&oacute;n con la autoevaluaci&oacute;n y la autoconcepci&oacute;n que se construye a partir de la interacci&oacute;n social. Desde esta perspectiva, la autoestima guarda alta relaci&oacute;n con la opini&oacute;n de otras personas (Baumeister, Campbell, Krueger y Vohs, 2003). El elemento com&uacute;n entre todas las definiciones propuestas para autoestima es su uso para expresar la noci&oacute;n, positiva o negativa, con que la persona se califica a s&iacute; misma (Gonz&aacute;lez, 1999).</p>     <p>Existen varios instrumentos para la medici&oacute;n de la autoestima global (Butler y Gasson, 2005; Montgomery y Goldbach, 2010), siendo la escala de Rosenberg (ERA; 1989) el instrumento m&aacute;s utilizado. Esta escala se conceptualiz&oacute; como una medici&oacute;n unidimensional de autoestima; no obstante, varias publicaciones mostraron que realmente es una escala bidimensional: una para autoestima positiva -autoconfianza o satisfacci&oacute;n personal- y otra para autoestima negativa -autodesprecio o devaluaci&oacute;n personal- (Farruggia, Chen, Greenberger, Dmitrieva y Macek, 2004; Huang y Dong, 2012; Owens, 1993; Tafarodi y Milne, 2002; Tafarodi y Swann, 2001).</p>     <p>Parece ser que estas dos dimensiones representan dos constructos diferentes, por lo que sus diez reactivos agrupan dos escalas, cinco reactivos para autoestima positiva y los cinco restantes para evaluar autoestima negativa (Huang y Dong, 2012; Owens, 1993). En esta misma l&iacute;nea, los estudios sobre la ERA han llevado a considerar que este instrumento cuenta con evaluaciones espec&iacute;ficas, seg&uacute;n el &aacute;mbito en el que sea empleado. En estos &aacute;mbitos se incluyen el acad&eacute;mico, el familiar, el laboral y el social (Garc&iacute;a y Ochoa, 1999; Vallerand, Pelletier y Gagne, 1991).</p>     <p>En dichas evaluaciones de las propiedades de la ERA se encuentran estudios independientes que confirman la presencia de dos dimensiones, as&iacute; como estudios que reportan una &uacute;nica dimensi&oacute;n (Ayyash-Abdo y Alamuddin, 2007; Koydemir y Demir, 2008; Robins, Hendin y Trzesniewski, 2001).</p>     <p>Adem&aacute;s, varias investigaciones realizadas con estudiantes universitarios hispanoamericanos informaron una adecuada consistencia interna para la escala global (Chaves et al., 2013; Mart&iacute;n-Albo, N&uacute;&ntilde;ez, Navarro y Grijalvo, 2007; Palacio, Mart&iacute;nez, Ochoa y Tirado, 2006; P&eacute;rez et al., 2011). Los diez &iacute;tems de la ERA, por lo general, muestran valores de alfa de Cronbach aceptables, superiores a 0.70 (Chaves et al., 2013; Mart&iacute;n-Albo et al., 2007; Palacio et al., 2006; P&eacute;rez et al., 2011). No obstante, esta observaci&oacute;n se puede relacionar con dos puntos. El primero se relaciona con que la mayor&iacute;a de las escalas bidimensionales presentan un primer factor que casi siempre recoge los aspectos esenciales del constructo (Norman y Streiner, 1996). Para el caso de la ERA, la dimensi&oacute;n de autoestima positiva (o autoconfianza) es el eje te&oacute;rico de la autoestima global, tal como se concibi&oacute; de manera inicial el instrumento (Rosenberg, 1989; Rosenberg, Schooler, Schoenbach y Rosenberg, 1995). El segundo es la alta sensibilidad del alfa de Cronbach al n&uacute;mero de &iacute;tems; a medida que se incrementa el n&uacute;mero de ellos se aumenta progresivamente el valor de la consistencia interna, sin que se incrementen las correlaciones entre los &iacute;tems (Keszei, Novak y Streiner, 2010; Streiner, 2003b; Terwee et al., 2007). Es decir, la alta correlaci&oacute;n entre los &iacute;tems de la dimensi&oacute;n autoestima positiva compensa las bajas correlaciones entre los &iacute;tems de la dimensi&oacute;n autoestima negativa, como en cualquier escala con dos dimensiones (Keszei et al., 2010; Tavakol y Dennick, 2011). Por ejemplo, si dos instrumentos, uno de cinco y otro de diez &iacute;tems, muestran igual consistencia interna, debe entenderse que aquel con cinco &iacute;tems es m&aacute;s consistente que el otro de diez &iacute;tems (Campo-Arias y Oviedo, 2008; Streiner, 2003a). En congruencia con los principios cl&aacute;sicos de la psicometr&iacute;a, se debe informar la consistencia interna separadamente para cada dimensi&oacute;n, como escalas independientes (Campo-Arias y Oviedo, 2008; Terwee et al., 2007).</p>     <p>En estudios con participantes de diferentes caracter&iacute;sticas y contextos, la dimensionalidad o estructura interna de la ERA mostr&oacute; distintas soluciones factoriales, espec&iacute;ficamente entre una y tres dimensiones (Franck, De Raedt, Barbez y Rosseel, 2008; Huang y Dong, 2012). Por ejemplo, en una investigaci&oacute;n realizada con estudiantes universitarios en Espa&ntilde;a se hall&oacute; una &uacute;nica dimensi&oacute;n (Mart&iacute;n-Albo et al., 2007); mientras que en otra, en la que la participaron adultos obesos en Brasil se observ&oacute; una estructura bidimensional (Meurer, Luft, Benedetti y Mazo, 2012).</p>     <p>Sin duda, conocer la consistencia interna y la dimensionalidad de un instrumento de medici&oacute;n en cada grupo poblacional es una condici&oacute;n que ayuda a aproximarse a la validez de un constructo en forma r&aacute;pida (Campo-Arias, Herazo y Oviedo, 2012; Campo-Arias y Oviedo, 2008; Tavakol y Dennick, 2011). Adem&aacute;s, estos indicadores de desempe&ntilde;o psicom&eacute;trico permiten a los investigadores realizar una revisi&oacute;n y adecuaci&oacute;n permanente de los aspectos te&oacute;ricos de la medici&oacute;n para garantizar el mayor grado de validez a sus procesos de investigaci&oacute;n (Allen, Reed-Rhoads, Terry, Murphy y Stone, 2008; Reise, Waller y Comrey, 2000).</p>     ]]></body>
<body><![CDATA[<p>La medici&oacute;n de la autoestima en estudiantes universitarios se ha relacionado repetidas veces con diferentes resultados en el contexto acad&eacute;mico, por ejemplo, con la permanencia o la deserci&oacute;n, el bienestar emocional, el desempe&ntilde;o laboral futuro, entre otros (Baumeister et al., 2003; Chaves et al., 2013; Palacio et al., 2006; P&eacute;rez et al., 2011; San Mart&iacute;n y Barra, 2013).</p>     <p>El objetivo de la presente investigaci&oacute;n fue conocer la consistencia interna y la dimensionalidad de la escala de Rosenberg para autoestima en una muestra de estudiantes universitarios de Santa Marta, Colombia.</p>     <p><font size="3"><b>M&eacute;todo</b></font></p>     <p><b>Dise&ntilde;o</b></p>     <p>Se realiz&oacute; un estudio de validaci&oacute;n instrumental para conocer la consistencia interna (homogeneidad) y la estructura interna (dimensionalidad) de un instrumento de medici&oacute;n de un constructo complejo. Se utilizaron diferentes pruebas estad&iacute;sticas intuitivas como una aproximaci&oacute;n a la validez y la confiabilidad del instrumento. El estudio tambi&eacute;n cont&oacute; con la revisi&oacute;n y la aprobaci&oacute;n de un comit&eacute; de &eacute;tica institucional en investigaci&oacute;n. La Fundaci&oacute;n Morris Rosenberg permite el uso sin restricci&oacute;n de la ERA en investigaciones y la pr&aacute;ctica cl&iacute;nica (Rosenberg, 1989). Las debilidades de la ERA como instrumento de medida son las propias de cualquier instrumento que intenta cuantificar un constructo complejo y con diferentes perspectivas en su conceptualizaci&oacute;n.</p>     <p>La evaluaci&oacute;n de la confiabilidad incluy&oacute; el c&aacute;lculo de la consistencia interna, que hace alusi&oacute;n a la coherencia entre los &iacute;tems que forman parte de una escala, y la definici&oacute;n de la estabilidad de la escala, que se refiere a la observaci&oacute;n de puntuaciones similares, en repetidas aplicaciones del instrumento, habitualmente    medida    con    un test-retest.</p>     <p><b>Participantes</b></p>     <p>Participaron 1349 estudiantes universitarios. La selecci&oacute;n se realiz&oacute; a partir de un muestreo probabil&iacute;stico en el que cada conglomerado estuvo representado por los estudiantes de un semestre acad&eacute;mico, de una universidad p&uacute;blica de Santa Marta, en la costa Caribe colombiana. Las edades de los estudiantes oscilaron entre 18 y 30 a&ntilde;os (M = 20.6, <i>DE </i>= 3.4). El 50.7% de los estudiantes eran hombres y el 49.3% mujeres. Seg&uacute;n la carrera, 917 estudiantes (68%) cursaban carreras de Ciencias Humanas o Sociales y 432 estudiantes (32%) carreras relacionadas con Ciencias de la Salud.</p>     <p><b>Instrumentos</b></p>     <p>La Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, dise&ntilde;ada por Morris Rosenberg (1965), presenta altos &iacute;ndices de fiabilidad con una consistencia interna de 0.77 y un coeficiente m&iacute;nimo de reproducibilidad de 0.90.</p>     ]]></body>
<body><![CDATA[<p>En el presente estudio se us&oacute; la ERA con el fin de explorar la percepci&oacute;n de estudiantes universitarios sobre su autoestima durante el &uacute;ltimo mes. Se utiliz&oacute; la versi&oacute;n que intercala los &iacute;tems para autoestima positiva (&iacute;tems 1, 3, 5, 7 y 9) y autoestima negativa (&iacute;tems 2, 4, 6, 8 y 10), y que emplea cuatro opciones de respuesta que van desde nunca hasta siempre. Cada &iacute;tem de autoestima positiva se calific&oacute; de 1 a 4, siendo 4 la m&aacute;xima puntuaci&oacute;n; en sentido inverso se calificaron los &iacute;tems de autoestima negativa (Rosenberg, 1989).</p>     <p>Este instrumento ha sido utilizado en m&aacute;s de 50 pa&iacute;ses, como Estados Unidos, Rep&uacute;blica Checa, China, Jap&oacute;n, Hungr&iacute;a, Eslovaquia, Colombia, entre otros (Schmitt y Allik, 2005).</p>     <p><b>Procedimiento</b></p>     <p>En el aula de clases, los estudiantes fueron informados de la confidencialidad de las respuestas de los cuestionarios y del resto de informaci&oacute;n, firmaron el consentimiento informado en el que se explicaba la posibilidad de no contestar las preguntas que consideraran intrusivas e incluso devolver el cuestionario sin diligenciar, si as&iacute; lo consideraban, sin que ello implicara sanci&oacute;n alguna. Los estudiantes diligenciaron el cuestionario demogr&aacute;fico y la ERA bajo supervisi&oacute;n de asistentes de investigaci&oacute;n entrenados, en un tiempo aproximado de 15 minutos. El proyecto fue revisado y aprobado por el comit&eacute; de &eacute;tica institucional, que consider&oacute; que el mismo no representaba riesgo para la integridad f&iacute;sica o emocional. Todos estos aspectos en cumplimiento de la normatividad &eacute;tica para la investigaci&oacute;n con seres humanos en Colombia (Resoluci&oacute;n 8430, 1993).</p>     <p><b>An&aacute;lisis de datos</b></p>     <p>El an&aacute;lisis estad&iacute;stico se llev&oacute; a cabo con la versi&oacute;n 16.0 de SPSS (2007). Para estimar la consistencia interna de la ERA se calcularon los coeficientes de alfa de Cronbach (1951) y de omega de McDonald (1970). La omega de McDonald tiene la ventaja de estimar la consistencia interna con mayor precisi&oacute;n que el alfa de Cronbach en los que casos en que los &iacute;tems que forman parte de la escala muestran coeficientes sustancialmente dis&iacute;miles en una matriz de coeficientes de an&aacute;lisis factorial o en los coeficientes de correlaci&oacute;n corregidos de cada &iacute;tem con la puntuaci&oacute;n total (Campo-Arias, Herazo y Oviedo, 2012; McDonald, 1970).</p>     <p>Para tener una medida inicial para la unidimensionalidad de la ERA, se calcul&oacute; el coeficiente Mosier (1943). Este coeficiente es una aproximaci&oacute;n a la unidimensionalidad te&oacute;rica de una escala si presenta un valor superior a 0.70 (Gerbing y Anderson, 1988).</p>     <p>Seguidamente, la estructura interna de la ERA se investig&oacute; con la t&eacute;cnica de an&aacute;lisis factorial exploratorio (AFE), sin hip&oacute;tesis previa de las posibles relaciones entre los &iacute;tems y sin suponer las eventuales dimensiones a identificar, como se hace en el an&aacute;lisis factorial confirmatorio (AFC; Jackson, Gillaspy y Purc-Stephenson, 2009). Es importante tener presente que algunos autores afirman que los resultados observados con AFE y AFC son menores y en la mayor&iacute;a de los casos las diferencias carecen de importancia pr&aacute;ctica (Burnett y Dart, 1997; Floyd y Widaman, 1995).</p>     <p>Para el AFE se emple&oacute; el m&eacute;todo de extracci&oacute;n de m&aacute;xima verosimilitud que brinda resultados m&aacute;s generalizables y reproducibles, por la ventaja que ofrece de no sobreestimar la varianza (Costello y Osborne, 2005). Adem&aacute;s, se calcul&oacute; el coeficiente de adecuaci&oacute;n de la muestra de Kayser-Meier-Olkin (KMO; Kayser, 1974). Valores superiores a 0.70 sugieren alta probabilidad para encontrar una o m&aacute;s dimensiones latentes en un grupo de &iacute;tems.</p>     <p>Se utiliz&oacute; la rotaci&oacute;n oblicua Promax que ofrece soluciones factoriales m&aacute;s f&aacute;ciles de interpretar con dimensiones latentes secundarias altamente correlacionadas, como es el caso de la ERA (Campo-Arias et al., 2012; Costello y Osborne, 2005; Gorsuch, 1997; Henson y Roberts, 2006; Streiner, 1994).</p>     ]]></body>
<body><![CDATA[<p><font size="3"><b>Resultados</b></font></p>     <p>Las medidas de confiabilidad para la ERA mostraron un coeficiente aceptable para alfa de Cronbach de 0.72, mientras que el coeficiente omega de McDonald estuvo por debajo del valor esperado (0.65). Por su parte, la prueba de unidimensionalidad present&oacute; un coeficiente de Mosier razonable, con valor de 0.75.</p>     <p>En el an&aacute;lisis factorial exploratorio de la ERA se observaron dos dimensiones: (a) autoestima positiva, que explic&oacute; el 32.3% de la varianza y (b) autoestima negativa, responsable del 13.8% de la varianza. La correlaci&oacute;n entre dimensiones fue baja, aunque se esperaban correlaciones m&aacute;s altas para dimensiones del mismo constructo (ver soluci&oacute;n en la <a href="#t1">tabla 1</a>).</p>     <center><a name="t1"><img src="img/revistas/pepsi/v15n2/v15n2a03t1.jpg"></a></center>     <p>Dada la soluci&oacute;n anterior, se calcul&oacute; la consistencia interna para cada dimensi&oacute;n. La autoestima positiva mostr&oacute; coeficientes con valores en el rango aceptable, con un alfa de Cronbach de 0.75 y omega de McDonald de 0.76. No se calcul&oacute; la prueba de Mosier por el n&uacute;mero reducido de puntos. La soluci&oacute;n factorial fue satisfactoria. Mayores detalles se presentan en la <a href="#t2">tabla 2</a>.</p>     <center><a name="t2"><img src="img/revistas/pepsi/v15n2/v15n2a03t2.jpg"></a></center>     <p>La dimensi&oacute;n autoestima negativa present&oacute; coeficientes bajos para la confiabilidad, con un alfa de Cronbach de 0.53 y un omega de McDonald de 0.63. La soluci&oacute;n factorial fue inapropiada. Los coeficientes se muestran en la <a href="#t3">tabla 3</a>.</p>     <center><a name="t3"><img src="img/revistas/pepsi/v15n2/v15n2a03t3.jpg"></a></center>     <p><font size="3"><b>Discusi&oacute;n</b></font></p>     <p>La evaluaci&oacute;n de la validez y de la dimensionalidad de la ERA se destac&oacute; por observar una consistencia interna aceptable para sus diez &iacute;tems, con una estructura bidimensional satisfactoria para dar cuenta de la autoestima de estudiantes universitarios de Santa Marta, Colombia.</p>     ]]></body>
<body><![CDATA[<p>Similar a los estudios precedentes, la ERA mostr&oacute; aceptable consistencia interna con un alfa de Cronbach de 0.72; no obstante, la omega de McDonald present&oacute; un valor deficiente de 0.65. Por su parte, el coeficiente de Mosier se encontr&oacute; dentro de lo esperado, en el extremo inferior. La omega de McDonald y el coeficiente de Mosier no se informaron en los estudios previos (Campbell, Eisner y Riggs, 2010; Chaves et al., 2013; Mart&iacute;n-Albo et al., 2007; Palacio et al., 2006; P&eacute;rez et al., 2011), a pesar de que varios autores consideran que la revisi&oacute;n de estos tres coeficientes permite tomar decisiones sobre la consistencia y la validez de un instrumento. Es m&aacute;s, definen que los coeficientes de alfa de Cronbach, omega de McDonald y Mosier son admisibles si se encuentran entre 0.70 y 0.90 (Campo-Arias y Oviedo, 2008; Gerbing y Anderson, 1988; Streiner, 2003a). Otros investigadores sostienen que los coeficientes entre 0.90 y 0.95 son los ideales (Bland y Altman, 1997; Tavakol y Dennick, 2011; Terwee et al., 2007). Para estos &uacute;ltimos autores, coeficientes por encima de 0.90, en un alto porcentaje de las situaciones de las mediciones cotidianas, predicen con gran precisi&oacute;n una estructura unidimensional y una mejor soluci&oacute;n factorial (Terwee et al., 2007). No obstante, se debe tener una precauci&oacute;n: la consistencia interna por encima de 0.90 implica, tambi&eacute;n, un alto riesgo de redundancia o &iacute;tems repetidos que incrementan falsamente este coeficiente. Los valores encontrados en el presente estudio indican que los &iacute;tems son lo suficientemente independientes y eval&uacute;an aspectos distintos del mismo constructo (Campo-Arias y Oviedo, 2008; Jaju y Crask, 1999; Oviedo y Campo-Arias, 2005; Tavakol y Dennick, 2011).</p>     <p>En relaci&oacute;n con la estructura interna de la ERA, en esta investigaci&oacute;n se observ&oacute; que la soluci&oacute;n bidimensional fue la m&aacute;s apropiada, lo que es consistente con la mayor&iacute;a de los estudios que indican que la ERA es una escala con dos dimensiones plenamente diferenciables (Boduszek, Hyland, Dhingra y Mallett, 2013; Galanou, Galanakis, Alexopoulos y Darviri, 2014; Huang y Dong, 2012; Jurado, Jurado, L&oacute;pez y Quereval&uacute;, 2015; McKay, Boduszek y Harvey, 2014; McMullen y Resnick, 2013; Mullen, Gothe y McAuley, 2013; Meurer, Luft, Benedetti y Mazo, 2012; Owens, 1993; Roth, Decker, Herzberg y Br&atilde;hler, 2008; Supple y Plunkett, 2011; Tafarodi y Milne, 2002; Tafarodi y Swann, 2001; Wongpakaran y Wongpakaran, 2012).</p>     <p>Por otra parte, tambi&eacute;n se observ&oacute; una baja correlaci&oacute;n entre las dimensiones, lo que sugiere que la autoestima positiva y la autoestima negativa son dos constructos distintos (Donnellan, Trzesniewski y Robins, 2011; McMullen y Resnick, 2013)&nbsp;. Este hallazgo es consistente con la propuesta de considerar las dimensiones de la ERA, autoestima positiva y autoestima negativa, como dos escalas completamente distintas y, en consecuencia, informar el desempe&ntilde;o de cada dimensi&oacute;n separadamente (Hyland, Boduszek, Dhingra, Shevlin y Egan, 2014; Tafarodi y Milne, 2002; Tafarodi y Swann, 2001). Algunos autores sugieren que la observaci&oacute;n de dos dimensiones en la ERA es un producto espurio, debido al resultado indeseado de los t&eacute;rminos que se incluyen en cada dimensi&oacute;n, como calificativos positivos o negativos (Dunbar, Ford, Hunt y Der, 2000; Marsh, 1996; Schmitt y Allik, 2005). No obstante, otros investigadores indican que las dimensiones no son un artefacto, dado que los ajustes o variaciones en estos calificativos en diferentes poblaciones no indujeron un cambio significativo en la estructura bidimensional de la ERA (Greenberger, Chen, Dmitrieva y Farruggia, 2003; Roth, Decker, Herzberg y Br&atilde;hler, 2008; Wongpakaran y Wongpakaran, 2012).</p>     <p>En el presente estudio se repite el hallazgo previo que mostr&oacute; que la autoestima positiva guarda una relaci&oacute;n m&aacute;s cercana con la autoestima global que la autoestima negativa (Hyland et al., 2014; Owens, 1993). Sin duda, es necesario definir mejor los tipos de autoestima, positiva y negativa, ya que cada uno se asocia a distintos resultados (Hyland et al., 2014; Owens, 1993; Rosenberg et al., 1995).</p>     <p>Los resultados tambi&eacute;n ponen de manifiesto la necesidad de revisar continua y repetidamente el desempe&ntilde;o de las escalas (S&aacute;nchez y Echeverry, 2004), y evidencian la divergencia te&oacute;rica y pr&aacute;ctica entre los criterios a considerar en la mejor soluci&oacute;n factorial para un conjunto de &iacute;tems. En otras palabras, siempre es necesario un an&aacute;lisis cuidadoso del desempe&ntilde;o psicom&eacute;trico de un instrumento en cada poblaci&oacute;n, el cual se utiliza para la medici&oacute;n de un constructo (Burnett y Dart, 1997; Costello y Osborne, 2005; Floyd y Widaman, 1995; Gorsuch, 1997; Henson y Roberts, 2006; Jackson et al., 2009; P&eacute;rez y Medrano, 2010; Reise et al., 2000; Streiner, 1994; Worthington y Whittaker, 2006).</p>     <p>Como ya se mencion&oacute;, el uso de escalas para la medici&oacute;n de constructos, como la autoestima en la pr&aacute;ctica cl&iacute;nica o investigativa, debe soportarse sobre un proceso juicioso de construcci&oacute;n del instrumento y su evaluaci&oacute;n en diferentes contextos para asegurar que sus resultados sean confiables y v&aacute;lidos (Costello y Osborne, 2005; Keszei et al., 2010; Smith, 2005 Terwee et al., 2007). Este proceso exige di&aacute;logo constante entre la teor&iacute;a, o conjunto de supuestos que respaldan la construcci&oacute;n de una medici&oacute;n, el desempe&ntilde;o de la escala en el &aacute;mbito cl&iacute;nico y en el &aacute;mbito de la investigaci&oacute;n y las implicaciones pr&aacute;cticas de los resultados de la evaluaci&oacute;n (Cook y Beckman, 2006; Finn y Kayande, 2004; Smith, 2005).</p>     <p>Este estudio es una contribuci&oacute;n a las observaciones m&aacute;s recientes sobre las dificultades para replicar la dimensionalidad de la ERA en todas las poblaciones. Adem&aacute;s, presenta diferentes coeficientes para probar la consistencia interna de la escala, que a la fecha otros informes no han publicado. Sin embargo, tiene la limitaci&oacute;n propia de los estudios que eval&uacute;an el desempe&ntilde;o psicom&eacute;trico de instrumentos de medici&oacute;n, dado que en psicometr&iacute;a el desempe&ntilde;o de las escalas dif&iacute;cilmente se puede generalizar, aun para instrumentos como la ERA, con aproximadamente 50 a&ntilde;os de validaciones y revisiones (Allen et al., 2008; Campo-Arias y Oviedo, 2008; Tavakol y Dennick, 2011).</p>     <p>Se concluye que la ERA es un instrumento bidimensional: una dimensi&oacute;n para autoestima positiva (autoconfianza/satisfacci&oacute;n personal) y otra para autoestima negativa (autodesprecio/ devaluaci&oacute;n personal), que se comportan como escalas distintas.
