Este déficit de inhibición conductual abarca una variedad de comportamientos que incluyen los aspectos de la hiperexcitabilidad, la desinhibición del comportamiento y el orden superior de toma de decisiones. Aunque por tradición, la definición de esta función ejecutiva ha sido conceptualizada desde una visión psicopatológica, en la actualidad la gran variedad de técnicas de evaluación neuropsicológicas, del desarrollo y en modelos animales nos invitan a establecer diálogos más integrativos desde los conocimientos de estas perspectivas teóricas para la interpretación y compresión de la impulsividad.]]></p></abstract>

Con el paso del tiempo la psicolog&iacute;a del desarrollo, la neuropsicolog&iacute;a y la misma neuroanatom&iacute;a nos han brindado nuevos conocimientos en torno a esta manifestaci&oacute;n comportamental de los seres vivos (Evenden, 1999; Pichot, L&oacute;pez &amp; Valdez, 1995; Squillace, Pic&oacute;n &amp; Schmidt, 2011). El concepto de este constructo te&oacute;rico ha sido objeto de importantes controversias, en parte por la dificultad de establecer asociaciones o v&iacute;nculos entre los postulados propuestos por la psicolog&iacute;a y el desarrollo biol&oacute;gico del ser humano.</p>      <p align="justify">El <i>Manual diagn&oacute;stico de trastornos mentales </i>(DSM IV) nos presenta un buen ejemplo de la afirmaci&oacute;n anterior. Este documento no ofrece una definici&oacute;n clara de la impulsividad, pero realiza una descripci&oacute;n de los posibles comportamientos impulsivos en relaci&oacute;n con algunas enfermedades mentales, haciendo &eacute;nfasis en el trastorno por d&eacute;ficit de atenci&oacute;n con o sin hiperactividad/ impulsividad (TDAH) (Pichot et &aacute;l., 1995). Otras patolog&iacute;as asociadas son identificadas en el juego patol&oacute;gico: las compras compulsivas y las adicciones en general, trastornos alimenticios como la bulimia, conductas hipersexualizadas y promiscuidad, la agresi&oacute;n reactiva y algunos trastornos de la personalidad como la histri&oacute;nica, la lim&iacute;trofe y la antisocial. Todas las anteriores se hallan en el DSM IV agrupadas bajo el nombre de des&oacute;rdenes de control de impulsos (Leshem &amp; Glicksohn, 2007; Rodriguez-Jimenez et &aacute;l., 2007).</p>      <p align="justify">La incapacidad de inhibici&oacute;n conductual est&aacute; descrita seg&uacute;n la neuropsicolog&iacute;a dentro de las funciones ejecutivas, las cuales son habilidades cognitivas implicadas en la iniciaci&oacute;n, la inhibici&oacute;n, la planificaci&oacute;n y la regulaci&oacute;n de los comportamientos que son necesarios para establecer objetivos a largo plazo. Estas funciones que se localizan principalmente en la corteza prefrontal (CPF), ayudan al control o ajuste del comportamiento del ser humano cuando las demandas ambientales as&iacute; lo exigen (Ardila &amp; Ostrosky-Sol&iacute;s, 2008; Ram&iacute;rez &amp; Ostrosky-Sol&iacute;s, 2009).</p>      <p align="justify">Barkley (1997) define a la impulsividad como la caracter&iacute;stica que permite retrasar e interrumpir respuestas para alcanzar los objetivos. La autorregulaci&oacute;n emocional y motivacional es otra de las funciones ejecutivas descrita por este autor y que est&aacute;n relacionadas con la incapacidad de inhibici&oacute;n conductual. Esta &uacute;ltima permite que el individuo tenga la posibilidad de controlar sus emociones y motivaciones para as&iacute; dirigir sus acciones hacia una meta. Barkley, afirma que la regulaci&oacute;n emocional y la abstenci&oacute;n de emitir respuestas inadecuadas son complementarias pero diferentes comportamentalmente, e incluso otorga un valor m&aacute;s relevante al autocontrol, argumentando que el d&eacute;ficit en esta habilidad (impulsividad) traer&iacute;a consigo el deterioro de otras funciones como la planificaci&oacute;n y la flexibilidad cognitiva (Barkley &amp; Russell, 1997).</p>      <p align="justify">Sin apartarse de tal perspectiva, pero con un mayor &eacute;nfasis en las habilidades observadas y no en los d&eacute;ficits, la psicolog&iacute;a del desarrollo se ha enfocado en dos aspectos espec&iacute;ficos relacionados con la impulsividad: la capacidad de autocontrol requerida en el retraso de la gratificaci&oacute;n <i>(delay of gratification) </i>y los procesos de toma de decisiones racionales (Casey et &aacute;l., 2011; Duckworth &amp; Kern, 2011; Kidd, Palmeri &amp; Aslin, 2013). Dicha distancia entre el estudio de la impulsividad y el desarrollo de las habilidades mencionadas puede deberse a la independencia de escuelas que, salvo m&iacute;nimas excepciones, logran reunir los estudios de investigadores interesados en el rasgo de la personalidad impulsiva, con el an&aacute;lisis experimental del comportamiento impulsivo y junto a estudios psiqui&aacute;tricos de la impulsividad o con la neurobiolog&iacute;a de la impulsividad (Evenden, 1999).</p>      <p align="justify">El prop&oacute;sito de este art&iacute;culo es establecer una descripci&oacute;n del comportamiento impulsivo, realizando la integraci&oacute;n de tres &aacute;reas del conocimiento: el neuropsicol&oacute;gico, el neuroanat&oacute;mico y la psicolog&iacute;a del desarrollo. A continuaci&oacute;n se inicia con un acercamiento al concepto de impulsividad y se sigue con una breve introducci&oacute;n de las &aacute;reas que se van a integrar, comenzando por la neuroanatom&iacute;a de la impulsividad y siguiendo con t&eacute;cnicas y m&eacute;todos de evaluaci&oacute;n, entre los cuales se incluyen los dedicados al estudio del desarrollo de la capacidad de autocontrol y los procesos de toma de decisiones racionales en ni&ntilde;os; se termina con una reflexi&oacute;n a modo de conclusi&oacute;n.</p>  <font size="3">     ]]></body>
<body><![CDATA[<br>    <p align="center"><b>Concepto de impulsividad</b></p></font>      <p align="justify">La palabra impulsividad proviene del lat&iacute;n <i>impulsus </i>que significa &quot;golpear o empujar&quot;. Este t&eacute;rmino es adaptado por los mecanicistas franceses haciendo alusi&oacute;n a comportamientos primitivos que escapan al control voluntario. Hist&oacute;ricamente, desde los inicios del siglo XIX, han sido investigadas las conductas impulsivas bajo el criterio de patolog&iacute;a de la voluntad, concebida inicialmente como ligada a los sentimientos y al intelecto y, posteriormente, considerada como una funci&oacute;n mental aut&oacute;noma, la cual era susceptible de enfermar, lo que contribuy&oacute; a que se pensar&aacute; la impulsividad como un signo de diferentes trastornos psicol&oacute;gicos y se estudiar&aacute; cient&iacute;ficamente desde la medicina y la psicolog&iacute;a (Haro et &aacute;l., 2004; Pinal &amp; P&eacute;rez, 2003).</p>      <p align="justify">Durante ese siglo, uno de los autores m&aacute;s representativos fue Esquirol (citado por Haro et &aacute;l., 2004), quien cre&oacute; el concepto de <i>&quot;monomanie instinctive&quot; </i>como alteraci&oacute;n de la voluntad, la cual est&aacute; presente en los trastornos impulsivos debido a una enfermedad cr&oacute;nica del cerebro. Ribbot (citado por Haro et &aacute;l., 2004; Pinal &amp; P&eacute;rez, 2003) retoma la definici&oacute;n de Esquirol, argumentando que dicho d&eacute;ficit ten&iacute;a como etiolog&iacute;a la presencia de un intelecto bajo y que este fen&oacute;meno correspond&iacute;a a una respuesta de tipo psico-fisiol&oacute;gico, explicando que el aumento en los impulsos anulaba el poder de controlar o inhibir la voluntad. Otro autor de gran importancia hist&oacute;rica fue Magnan (1887), quien defini&oacute; las impulsiones (impulsividad) como una r&aacute;pida explosi&oacute;n de energ&iacute;a y una falta de control voluntario, a&ntilde;adiendo este concepto a la descripci&oacute;n de diferentes enfermedades mentales y explicando la etiolog&iacute;a separada de los trastornos de tipo emocional (Haro et &aacute;l., 2004; Pinal &amp; P&eacute;rez, 2003).</p>      <p align="justify">A finales del siglo xx hubo un aumento en el inter&eacute;s por el estudio de la impulsividad, debido a eventos en los cuales hac&iacute;a evidente el riesgo de este comportamiento, no solo para el individuo, sino tambi&eacute;n para la comunidad, siendo la piroman&iacute;a una de las manifestaciones m&aacute;s evidentes. La definici&oacute;n m&aacute;s compartida al inicio de aquella &eacute;poca se halla en la descripci&oacute;n de la impulsividad como una enfermedad cong&eacute;nita caracterizada por la invalidez ps&iacute;quica general, donde el punto m&aacute;s d&eacute;bil es la falta de control debido a un desarrollo patol&oacute;gico de impulsos. Esta definici&oacute;n se fue modificando, incluyendo definiciones en las cuales se entend&iacute;a la impulsividad como la tendencia a responder r&aacute;pidamente sin reflexi&oacute;n previa, comportamientos de furia y agresividad o la incapacidad de actuar usando la atenci&oacute;n sostenida (Haro et &aacute;l., 2004; Pinal &amp; P&eacute;rez, 2003)</p>      <p align="justify">Estas definiciones, descritas desde la perspectiva psicopatol&oacute;gica de la impulsividad, se han categorizado con tres significados: s&iacute;ntoma de otras psicopatolog&iacute;as; una tendencia a provocar actos perjudiciales sin planificaci&oacute;n (por ejemplo la agresi&oacute;n reactiva) y un rasgo de la personalidad (Pinal &amp; P&eacute;rez, 2003).</p>      <p align="justify">La falta de una conceptualizaci&oacute;n y operacionalizaci&oacute;n de la impulsividad dificult&oacute; su investigaci&oacute;n y, por tal raz&oacute;n, es a comienzos del siglo XXI que se da un mayor auge de estudios experimentales que tienen como principal objetivo la compresi&oacute;n de este comportamiento (&Aacute;vila, Cuenca, F&eacute;lix, Parcet &amp; Miranda, 2004; Haro et &aacute;l., 2004; Leshem &amp; Glicksohn, 2007; Perales, Verdejo-Garc&iacute;a, Moya, Lozano &amp; P&eacute;rez-Garc&iacute;a, 2009). Moeller, Barrat, Dougherty, Schmitz y Swann (2001) propusieron una de las definiciones m&aacute;s utilizadas para la descripci&oacute;n de la impulsividad, descrita como la predisposici&oacute;n que los sujetos tienen hacia est&iacute;mulos internos y externos sin considerar las consecuencias negativas de estas acciones, siendo esta tendencia producto de una falla en el desarrollo de la voluntad.</p>      <p align="justify">Una de las definiciones vigentes y con la cual varios autores han interpretado sus postulados sobre esta conducta, es la de considerar a la impulsividad como un rasgo de personalidad dimensional que se ha aplicado a muchos aspectos diferentes del comportamiento animal y en los seres humanos, caracterizado por el d&eacute;ficit en la inhibici&oacute;n de la conducta, el cambio de comportamiento ante la demanda del medio ambiente y la tolerancia para el retraso de la gratificaci&oacute;n (Dellu-Hagedorn, Trunet, &amp; Simon, 2004; McCloskey et &aacute;l., 2009; Moeller et &aacute;l., 2001; Swann, Bjork, Moeller &amp; Dougherty, 2002).</p>      <p align="justify">Finalmente, y como se menciona al principio, la psicolog&iacute;a del desarrollo aborda los d&eacute;ficits que definen la impulsividad y los transforma en oportunidades para el estudio de la capacidad de autocontrol requerida en el retraso de la gratificaci&oacute;n y en los procesos y habilidades de toma de decisiones racionales en ni&ntilde;os. Tales estudios han demostrado que a partir de los dos a&ntilde;os de edad se observan comportamientos de tolerancia al retraso de recompensas muy cercanos a edades mayores y similares a los reportes en adultos (Steelandt, Thierry, Broihanne &amp; Dufour, 2012). El aumento de la tolerancia en los comportamientos observados se relaciona frecuentemente y de manera positiva con mejores resultados acad&eacute;micos y &eacute;xito social posterior (Casey et &aacute;l., 2011; Duckworth &amp; Kern, 2011) y de forma negativa con comportamientos de riesgo y adicciones en la adolescencia y juventud temprana (Liu et &aacute;l., 2012; Romer, 2010). Las habilidades de toma de decisiones surgen como una alternativa que no excluye la capacidad de autocontrol y tolerancia al retraso de la gratificaci&oacute;n, pero que incluye el an&aacute;lisis que ni&ntilde;os desde los tres a&ntilde;os de edad pueden hacer de las condiciones de confiabilidad del ambiente para la entrega de recompensas (Kidd et &aacute;l., 2013). Es decir, que en condiciones confiables los ni&ntilde;os tienden a mantener y demostrar su capacidad de autocontrol, pero en condiciones que generan baja confiabilidad en el ambiente para mantener las recompensas, estas capacidades no son expuestas de la misma forma.</p>  <font size="3">     <br>    ]]></body>
<body><![CDATA[<p align="center"><b>Neuroanatom&iacute;a de la impulsividad</b></p></font>      <p align="justify">La compleja red neuronal involucrada en la expresi&oacute;n de conductas impulsivas incluye a las zonas de la corteza prefrontal ventromedial (CPFVM), la corteza cingulada anterior (CCA), el n&uacute;cleo basolateral de la am&iacute;gdala (nBLA), el n&uacute;cleo subtal&aacute;mico (nST) y el accubems (nACC), como regiones cerebrales que participan en la incapacidad de la inhibici&oacute;n conductual; todas ellas relacionadas con la expresi&oacute;n emocional y las funciones ejecutivas y motoras (Alc&aacute;zar-C&oacute;rcoles, Verdejo-Garc&iacute;a, Bouso-Saiz &amp; Bezos-Salda&ntilde;a, 2010; Kalenscher, Ohmann &amp; Gunturkun, 2006). Esta clasificaci&oacute;n anat&oacute;mica es consistente con el postulado de Filipek et &aacute;l. (1997) sobre la disfunci&oacute;n dopamin&eacute;rgica de la corteza frontal derecha y el estriado bilateral como posible explicaci&oacute;n al trastorno de hiperactividad/impulsividad (Filipek et &aacute;l., 1997).</p>      <p align="justify">De forma espec&iacute;fica, a la CPF se le ha atribuido un papel importante en los modelos de acci&oacute;n autodirigidos que permiten al individuo maximizar globalmente los resultados sociales de su comportamiento, una vez que han considerado simult&aacute;neamente las consecuencias inmediatas y tard&iacute;as de las distintas alternativas de respuesta, protagonismo establecido por los estudios neuropsicol&oacute;gicos realizados a pacientes con lesiones en el l&oacute;bulo frontal (Bechara, Tranel &amp; Damasio, 2000; Hartje &amp; Poeck, 1997; Kalenscher et &aacute;l., 2006). En este sentido, esta zona cortical se ha identificado m&aacute;s con las conductas impulsivas que con las funciones de regulaci&oacute;n y reconocimiento emocional que se encuentran ubicadas en el sistema l&iacute;mbico.</p>      <p align="justify">Las investigaciones en modelos animales han permitido proponer que la CPFVM, la CCA, el nABL, el nST y el nACC parecen presentar funciones diferenciales durante la manifestaci&oacute;n de la impulsividad (Dannon, Shoenfeld, Rosenberg, Kertzman &amp; Kotler, 2010; Kalenscher et &aacute;l., 2006). El nACC y el nABL posiblemente son los encargados de mantener el valor del incentivo de recompensa cuando se presenta el premio o la ganancia en tiempos con demora o retraso. El nST puede ser relevante para las asociaciones pavlovianas y la CPFVM ser&iacute;a la encargada de la supervisi&oacute;n y actualizaci&oacute;n de las representaciones de las recompensas esperadas (Winstanley, Eagle &amp; Robbins, 2006).</p>      <p align="justify">Los anteriores antecedentes anat&oacute;micos nos permiten concluir que la impulsividad est&aacute; relacionada con el funcionamiento de m&uacute;ltiples estructuras cerebrales, cada una de ellas con un papel espec&iacute;fico y complementario, no bajo el control exclusivo de la CPF como tradicionalmente se cre&iacute;a (Braquehais, Ramos-Quiroga &amp; Sher, 2010).</p>  <font size="3">     <br>    <p align="center"><b>T&eacute;cnicas y m&eacute;todos de evaluaci&oacute;n</b></p></font>      <p align="justify">Con cierto rasgo de integraci&oacute;n, el estudio del comportamiento impulsivo en el ser humano presenta ciertas similitudes con el realizado en modelos animales en el an&aacute;lisis de variables; como ejemplo: la incapacidad o dificultad de la inhibici&oacute;n de respuestas (perseverancia) y la tendencia a responder con rapidez a los est&iacute;mulos sin importar el grado de gratificaci&oacute;n en presencia o no de recompensa (Folino, Escobar C&oacute;rdoba &amp; Castillo, 2006; Squillace et &aacute;l., 2011). En este sentido, en el campo de la Psicolog&iacute;a encontramos tres &aacute;mbitos o enfoques de evaluaci&oacute;n para la impulsividad: el neuropsicol&oacute;gico, el del desarrollo y el de la psicolog&iacute;a fisiol&oacute;gica mediante modelos animales.</p>      <p align="justify">Algunas de la pruebas neuropsicol&oacute;gicas m&aacute;s conocidos son: el <i>Stroop, </i>el <i>Stop Signal, </i>el <i>Matching familiar figures, </i>el de <i>Iowa Gambling Task </i>(para identificar juego patol&oacute;gico), las cartas de Wisconsin, la torre de Londres y las tareas de ejecuci&oacute;n continua (<a href="#t1">tabla 1</a>) (Dannon et &aacute;l., 2010; Dellu-Hagedorn et &aacute;l., 2004; Dougherty, Marsh-Richard, Hatzis, Nouvion &amp; Mathias, 2008).</p>      <p align="center"><a name="t1"></a><img src="img/revistas/apl/v31n1/v31n1a19t01.jpg"></p>      ]]></body>
<body><![CDATA[<p align="justify">Para el estudio del desarrollo de la impulsividad y el autocontrol se encuentran al menos cuatro tipos de situaciones relacionadas con el estudio del retraso de la gratificaci&oacute;n (Duckworth &amp; Kern, 2011; Kim, Deater-Deckard, Mullineaux &amp; Beekman, 2010; Kross, Duckworth, Ayduk, Tsukayama &amp; Mischel, 2011): la elecci&oacute;n hipot&eacute;tica, la elecci&oacute;n real, el retraso sostenido y el retraso de ensayos repetidos (<a href="#t2">tabla 2</a>). Los resultados en estas tareas son altamente convergentes con estudios realizados a trav&eacute;s del an&aacute;lisis de las funciones ejecutivas, autorreportes o cuestionarios de personalidad (Duckworth &amp; Kern, 2011).</p>      <p align="center"><a name="t2"></a><img src="img/revistas/apl/v31n1/v31n1a19t02.jpg"></p>      <p align="justify">Los estudios de desarrollo en el componente de toma de decisiones se hacen a partir del an&aacute;lisis de decisiones intertemporales<a name="n1"></a><a href="#n_1"><sup>1</sup></a> (elegir entre recibir mil pesos hoy o recibir dos mil pesos en una semana) y la relaci&oacute;n de estas decisiones con sistemas espec&iacute;ficos de procesamiento de la informaci&oacute;n, caracterizados por una gran estabilidad entre los hallazgos tempranos en el comportamiento impulsivo y posteriores efectos de car&aacute;cter multidimensional (Casey et &aacute;l., 2011).</p>      <p align="justify">En los modelos animales se ha estudiado la participaci&oacute;n de los sistemas bioqu&iacute;micos serotonin&eacute;rgicos y dopamin&eacute;rgicos, y desde la neuroanatom&iacute;a al circuito frontoestriatales, mediante la medici&oacute;n de pruebas de toma de decisiones: <i>delay-discounting </i>y la impulsividad motora: <i>go/no go, five choice serial </i>(<a href="#t3">tabla 3</a>) (Dannon et &aacute;l., 2010; Dougherty et &aacute;l., 2008; Marsh, Dougherty, Matthias, Moeller &amp; Hicks, 2002).</p>      <p align="center"><a name="t3"></a><img src="img/revistas/apl/v31n1/v31n1a19t03.jpg"></p>  <font size="3">     <br>    <p align="center"><b>Reflexi&oacute;n final</b></p></font>      <p align="justify">Este art&iacute;culo describe el amplio escenario de los estudios de la impulsividad y sugiere una mayor integraci&oacute;n en futuras indagaciones sistem&aacute;ticas de dicho comportamiento, al proponer que el concepto de impulsividad no es un constructo unitario, sino que abarca una variedad de fen&oacute;menos relacionados como la planeaci&oacute;n, la toma de decisiones, la flexibilidad cognitiva, la autorregulaci&oacute;n emocional y la motivaci&oacute;n, los cuales difieren y al mismo tiempo se relacionan en las bases biol&oacute;gicas, la variabilidad durante el desarrollo psicol&oacute;gico y algunos dise&ntilde;os y herramientas metodol&oacute;gicas espec&iacute;ficas. Por tanto, es indispensable continuar con las investigaciones neurofisiol&oacute;gicas sobre el comportamiento impulsivo a lo largo del desarrollo del ser humano, integrando los conceptos, postulados y hallazgos en funci&oacute;n de las edades de los participantes y de la psicolog&iacute;a fisiol&oacute;gica, lo cual permitir&aacute; una adecuada definici&oacute;n y comprensi&oacute;n del comportamiento impulsivo (Braquehais et &aacute;l., 2010; Marusich, Darna, Charnigo, Dwoskin &amp; Bardo, 2011; Moeller et &aacute;l., 2001; Morgan, Gray &amp; Snowden, 2011) junto a la formulaci&oacute;n de nuevos tratamientos psicoterap&eacute;uticos, farmacol&oacute;gicos y educativos para el desarrollo del individuo.</p>  <hr>      <p align="justify"><a name="n_1"></a><a href="#n1"><sup>1</sup></a> El t&eacute;rmino &quot;intertemporal&quot; hace referencia a dise&ntilde;os experimentales que permiten el cruce de una unidad de tiempo y una recompensa.
