Solar distillation is an eco- friendly and low-cost method for obtaining freshwater from saline or impure water sources. The design of solar stills requires exploring different configurations to achieve the desired water production.  Objective. In this study, the SESS software is presented as a tool that enables users to simulate and calculate the water production of a simple effect solar still based on their materials, dimensions, and weather conditions.  Materials and methods. SESS software was developed in Matlab®. The process starts formulating a mathematical model for the thermal behavior of a simple effect solar still. Then, the model is solved using the fourth order Runge-Kutta method, and a user interface is created. Finally, SESS software is validated by comparing experimental data from a solar still prototype with simulation results in the same conditions.  Results. During the validation process, the software exhibited a mean absolute percentage error of % for water temperature, 1.47 % for base temperature, and 35.31 % for the volume of distilled water. These findings lie within the reported range of similar studies.  Conclusions. SESS effectively serves as a valuable tool for supporting solar still design.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[Resumen  Introducción. La destilación solar es un método ecológico y de bajo costo para obtener agua dulce a partir de fuentes de agua salina o impura. El diseño de destiladores solares requiere explorar diferentes configuraciones para lograr la producción de agua deseada.  Objetivo. En este estudio, el software SESS se presenta como una herramienta que permite a los usuarios simular y calcular la producción de agua de un destilador solar de efecto simple en función de sus materiales, dimensiones y condiciones climáticas.  Materiales y métodos. El software SESS fue desarrollado en Matlab®. El proceso realizado parte de la formulación de un modelo matemático del comportamiento térmico de un destilador solar de simple efecto.Luego, el modelo se resuelve utilizando el método de Runge-Kutta de cuarto orden y se crea una interfaz de usuario. Finalmente, el software SESS se valida comparando datos experimentales de un prototipo de destilador solar, con resultados de simulación en las mismas condiciones.  Resultados. Durante el proceso de validación, el software mostró un error porcentual absoluto medio de 1,11 % para la temperatura del agua, 1,47 % para la temperatura base y 35,31 % para el volumen de agua destilada. Estos hallazgos se encuentran dentro del rango informado por estudios similares.  Conclusiones. O projeto de destiladores solares requer a exploração de diferentes configurações para atingir a produção de água desejada.  Objetivo. Neste estudo, o software SESS é apresentado como uma ferramenta que permite aos usuários simular e calcular a produção de água de um destilador solar de efeito único com base em seus materiais, dimensões e condições climáticas.  Materiais e métodos. O software SESS foi desenvolvido em Matlab®. O processo realizado parte da formulação de um modelo matemático do comportamento térmico de um destilador solar de simples efeito. O modelo é então resolvido usando o método Runge-Kutta de quarta ordem e uma interface com o usuário é criada. Finalmente, o software SESS é validado comparando dados experimentais de um protótipo de destilador solar, com resultados de simulação nas mesmas condições.  Resultados. Durante o processo de validação, o software apresentou um erro percentual médio absoluto de 1,11 % para a temperatura da água, 1,47 % para a temperatura base e 35,31 % para o volume de água destilada.
