Through gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis, several compounds were identified, including pyranones, phenolic compounds, terpenes, coumarin, aryl-tetrahydrofurans, and phenylpropanoids. Among the most abundant compounds were 3,5-dihydroxy-6-methyl-2,3-dihydro-4H-pyran-4-one and palmitic acid. Although several known metabolites were identified, the main focus was on evaluating the antibacterial capacity of the complete extract. The study's findings indicate that the ethanolic extract exhibits substantial inhibition against various bacteria. Specifically, Gram-positive S. aureus showed the greatest sensitivity to the extract, with an average inhibition zone of 13.12 mm, followed by E. coli with an average inhibition of 10.95 mm. These findings suggest that the M. pyramidata extract could be a promising source for the development of antimicrobial agents. However, it is emphasized that the tests were conducted in vitro, and further research is needed to confirm the efficacy of the extract in clinical in vivo applications. This study highlights the importance of evaluating underexplored natural resources like weeds in the search for antimicrobial solutions and contributes to the understanding of the potential of M. pyramidata in antibacterial research.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[RESUMEN Este estudio investiga las propiedades antibacterianas de extractos etanólicos de la maleza Melochia pyramidata L. A través del análisis de cromatografía de gases acoplada a espectrometría de masas (GC-MS), se identificaron varios compuestos, incluyendo piranonas, compuestos fenólicos, terpenos, cumarina, aril-tetrahidrofuranos y fenilpropanoides. Entre los compuestos más abundantes se encontraron la 3,5-dihidroxi-6-metil-2,3-dihidro-4H-piran-4-ona y el ácido palmítico. Aunque se identificaron varios metabolitos conocidos, el enfoque principal se centró en la evaluación de la capacidad antibacteriana del extracto completo. Los resultados del estudio indican que el extracto etanólico exhibe una inhibición sustancial contra varias bacterias. Específicamente, S. aureus, una bacteria Gram-positiva, mostró la mayor sensibilidad al extracto, con una zona media de inhibición de 13,12 mm, seguido por E. coli con una inhibición media de 10,95 mm. Estos hallazgos sugieren que el extracto de M. pyramidata podría ser una fuente prometedora para el desarrollo de agentes antimicrobianos. Sin embargo, se destaca que las pruebas se realizaron in vitro, y es necesario realizar más investigaciones para confirmar la eficacia del extracto en aplicaciones clínicas in vivo.
