El objetivo es demostrar el beneficio al implementar el uso de kits desechables en procedimientos de terapia intravenosa en comparación con el método tradicional en instituciones de salud en México.  Materiales y Métodos: Estudio prospectivo cuasiexperimental. Se comparó el apego al uso de barrera máxima estéril, tiempos y movimientos en la recolección del material hasta la realización del procedimiento en 278 pacientes utilizando kits desechables y 322 pacientes con el procedimiento tradicional en 7 instituciones de salud de segundo nivel en México.  Resultados: El uso de kits desechables presentan los siguientes beneficios: aumento del uso de máximas barreras durante los procedimientos, reducción de tiempos y movimientos del personal de salud. Existe diferencia significativa con el uso de kits desechables (p&lt;0.001).  Discusión: El uso de kits desechables favorece a la estandarización y apego del uso de barrera máxima; lo anterior incrementa la adherencia a normatividad y protocolos institucionales.  Conclusiones: El uso de un kit desechable como intervención; optimiza tiempo y favorece la estandarización, apego a las estrategias nacionales e internacionales en materia de prevención de infecciones asociadas a cateterismo vascular.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract  Introduction: In Mexico, 95% of hospitalized patients will require vascular access and intravenous therapy; however, the use of standardized interventions favors preventing and reducing infections associated to vascular catheters. The objective was to demonstrate the benefit upon implementing the use of disposable kits in intravenous therapy procedures compared to the traditional method in health institutions in Mexico.  Materials and Methods: This was a quasi-experimental prospective study, which compared adherence to the use of maximum sterile barrier, times and movements in collecting material until performing the procedure in 278 patients by using disposable kits and 322 patients with the traditional procedure in seven tier II health institutions in Mexico.  Results: Using disposable kits has the following benefits: increased use of maximum barriers during the procedures and reduced times and movements by the health staff. Significant difference exists with the use of disposable kits (p&lt;0.001).  Discussion: Use of disposable kits favors standardization and adherence of using maximum barrier, which increases adherence to institutional norms and protocols.  Conclusions: Use of a disposable kit as intervention optimizes time and favors standardization, and adherence to national and international strategies regarding prevention of infections associated to vascular catheters.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="pt"><p><![CDATA[Resumo  Introdução: No México 95% dos pacientes hospitalizados requer um acesso vascular e terapia de infusão; no entanto, o uso de intervenções padronizadas favorece a prevenção e redução de infecções associadas ao cateter vascular. O objetivo é demonstrar o benefício mediante a implementação do uso de kits descartáveis em procedimentos de terapia intravenosa em comparação com o método tradicional em instituições de saúde no México.  Materiais e Métodos: Estudo prospectivo quasi-experimental. Foi comparada a adesão ao uso de barreira máxima estéril, tempos e movimentos para a coleta de material até a realização do procedimento em 278 pacientes usando kits descartáveis e 322 pacientes com o procedimento tradicional em 7 instituições de saúde de segundo nível no México.  Resultados: O uso de kits descartáveis apresentam os seguintes benefícios: aumento do uso de barreiras máximas durante os procedimentos, redução de tempos e movimentação de pessoal de saúde. Existe uma diferença significativa com o uso de kits descartáveis (p &lt;0.001).  Discussão: O uso de kits descartáveis favorece a padronização e adesão do uso de barreira máxima; isso incrementa a aderência às normas e protocolos institucionais.  Conclusões: O uso de um kit descartável como intervenção, otimiza o tempo e promove a padronização, adesão ás estratégias nacionais e internacionais em matéria de prevenção de infecções associadas ao cateter vascular.]]></p></abstract>
