En el caso de México, la proporción es aún mayor, toda vez que 8 de cada 10 habitantes residen en una ciudad. El comportamiento demográfico en estas ciudades ha cambiado de tendencia: desde 1990 las grandes zonas metropolitanas mexicanas han disminuido su crecimiento poblacional y se ha intensificado el de las ciudades intermedias. Sin embargo, la producción de documentos tanto de política urbana como en publicaciones científicas se ha concentrado en analizar las grandes urbes metropolitanas. En este sentido, este artículo tiene como objetivo estudiar los factores, características y funciones de la ciudad de Morelia (México) que permitirían considerarla como intermedia, a partir de su lugar en la actual jerarquía urbano-regional, derivado principalmente de su relación con el ferrocarril interurbano trasnacional y de su rol de intermediación por estar ubicada sobre el corredor logístico transcontinental al que pertenece.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract The city represents the human environment par excellence, as around 60 % of the world's population is concentrated in cities. In the case of Mexico, the proportion is even higher, with 8 out of 10 inhabitants living in a city. The demographic behavior in these cities has changed trends: since 1990, the population growth of Mexico's large metropolitan areas has decreased and that of intermediate cities has intensified. However, the production of both urban policy documents and scientific publications has concentrated on analyzing large metropolitan cities. In this regard, this article aims to study the factors, characteristics and functions of the city of Morelia (Mexico) that would classify it as an intermediate city, based on its place in the current urban-regional hierarchy, derived mainly from its relationship with the transnational interurban railroad and its intermediary role as it is located on the transcontinental logistic corridor to which it belongs.]]></p></abstract>

O comportamento demográfico nestas cidades mudou as tendências: desde 1990, as grandes áreas metropolitanas mexicanas diminuíram o seu crescimento populacional e o das cidades intermédias intensificou-se. Contudo, a produção tanto de documentos de política urbana como de publicações científicas tem se concentrado na análise das grandes cidades metropolitanas. Nesse sentido, este artigo tem como objetivo estudar os fatores, características e funções da cidade de Morelia (México) que permitiriam que ela fosse considerada intermediária, a partir de sua posição na atual hierarquia urbano-regional, derivada principalmente de sua relação com a ferrovia interurbana transnacional e seu papel de intermediação por estar localizada no corredor logístico transcontinental ao qual pertence.]]></p></abstract>
