Esta conexión ha convertido a los caninos en miembros esenciales de muchas familias, aportando no solo compañía, sino beneficios emocionales y sociales significativos (1). Sin embargo, la tenencia de perros también conlleva riesgos, especialmente en lo que respecta a la salud pública. La transmisión de agentes infecciosos, como parásitos gastrointestinales, puede ser un problema, particularmente cuando se combinan factores ecológicos y conductas humanas inadecuadas (2). Por tanto, es fundamental promover una tenencia responsable y educar a los dueños sobre las mejores prácticas para asegurar una convivencia saludable y armoniosa con sus mascotas.  Objetivo: Evaluar la prevalencia de parásitos gastrointestinales en caninos domésticos del área metropolitana de Bucaramanga, Santander.  Materiales y métodos:  Se realizó un estudio descriptivo transversal de 798 coprológicos entre enero y agosto de 2024 en el laboratorio de la Clínica Veterinaria Maxcotas Center. Se diagnosticaron mediante la técnica de flotación de Sheather y frotis directo con solución salina (NaCI 0,9 %) y Lugol parasitológico. Todos los análisis estadísticos fueron calculados y gratados mediante el software estadístico SPSS v. 25.0.  Resultados:  Los resultados mostraron que el 56,2 % (448/798) de las muestras analizadas fueron positivas para parásitos gastrointestinales helmintos (21,2 %) y protozoos (35 %), mientras que el 43,9 % (350/798) no presentó evidencia de infección. Las prevalencias de los parásitos identificados fueron Entamoeba spp. con un 31,25 %, Toxocara spp. 19,15 %; Ancylostoma caninum 16,70 %; Giardia spp. 16,20 %; Isospora spp. 14,70 % y finalmente, Dipylidium caninum, con un 2 %. Los factores comosexo y zona no fueron significativos en la estadística (valor p &gt; 0,05) a diferencia de factores como raza y parasitados.  Conclusiones:  La alta prevalencia de parásitos gastrointestinales en caninos domésticos representa un riesgo significativo para la salud de los caninos y de los humanos, ya que muchos de ellos son zoonóticos. Con una buena gestión y cuidados adecuados, se pueden minimizar las infecciones y mantener un entorno saludable para el animal y su tutor. Asimismo, la detección y tratamiento oportuno de parásitos gastrointestinales en caninos es crucial para prevenir la transmisión zoonótica.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract:  Introduction:  For centuries, dogs have formed a unique and profound bond with humans, serving as loyal companions, hunters, and rescuers. This connection has made them integral members of many households, providing not only companionship but also significant emotional and social benefits (1). However, dog ownership also comes with responsibilities, particularly regarding public health. The transmission of infectious agents, such as gastrointestinal parasites, poses a concern, especially when combined with ecological factors and inadequate human practices (2). Therefore, promoting responsible pet ownership and educating dog owners on best practices is essential to ensuring a healthy and harmonious coexistence.  Objective:  To determine the prevalence of gastrointestinal parasites in domestic dogs in the metropolitan area of Bucaramanga, Santander.  Materials and Methods:  A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted, analyzing 798 fecal samples collected between January and August 2024 at the Maxcotas Center Veterinary Clinic Laboratory. The Sheather flotation technique and direct smear with saline solution (NaCI 0.9%) and Lugol's iodine were used for diagnosis. Statistical analyses were performed using SPSS software v. 25.0.  Results:  Of the 798 samples analyzed, 56.2% (448/798) tested positive for gastrointestinal parasites, including helminths (21.2%) and protozoa (35%), while 43.9% (350/798) showed no evidence of infection. The identified parasites and their prevalence were as follows: Entamoeba spp. (31.25%), Toxocara spp. (19.15%), Ancylostoma caninum (16.70%), Giardia spp. (16.20%), Isospora spp. (14.70%), and Dipylidium caninum (2%). While sex and geographic area were not statistically significant factors (p &gt; 0.05), breed and parasitism showed a significant correlation.  Conclusions:  The high prevalence of gastrointestinal parasites in domestic dogs poses a considerable risk to both canine and human health, as many of these parasites are zoonotic. Proper pet management and preventive measures can significantly reduce infections, fostering a healthier environment for both dogs and their owners. Additionally, early detection and treatment of gastrointestinal parasites are crucial in preventing zoonotic transmission.]]></p></abstract>

No entanto, a posse de cães também envolve riscos, especialmente no que se refere à saúde pública. A transmissão de agen tes infecciosos, como parasitas gastrointestinais, pode ser um problema, particularmente quando fatores ecológicos e comportamentos humanos inadequados estão envolvidos (2). Portanto, é fun damental promover a posse responsável e educar os tutores sobre as melhores práticas para garan tir uma convivência saudável e harmoniosa com seus animais de estimação.  Objetivo:  Avaliar a pre valência de parasitas gastrointestinais em cães domésticos da área metropolitana de Bucaramanga, Santander.  Materiais e métodos: Foi realizado um estudo descritivo transversal de 798 exames coproparasitológicos entre janeiro e agosto de 2024 no laboratório da Clínica Veterinária Maxcotas Center. O diagnóstico foi feito por meio da técnica de flutuação de Sheather e esfregaço direto com solução salina (NaCl 0,9%) e Lugol parasitológico. Todas as análises estatísticas foram calculadas e re presentadas graficamente pelo software estatístico SPSS v. 25.0.  Resultados:  Os resultados mostra ram que 56,2% (448/798) das amostras analisadas foram positivas para parasitas gastrointestinais, sendo helmintos (21,2%) e protozoarios (35%). Já 43,9% (350/798) não apresentaram evidência de in fecção. As prevalências dos parasitas identificados foram: Entamoeba spp. com 31,25%, Toxocara spp. 19,15%, Ancylostoma caninum 16,70%, Giardia spp. 16,20%, Isospora spp. 14,70% e, por fim, Dipylidium caninum, com 2%.
