Los medios especializados en el sector de la educación superior en Colombia hablan de la caída de su demanda, ¿pero a qué hace referencia esta afirmación? ¿Qué se entiende cuando se habla de la “caída”? Diferentes hipótesis se han aceptado tácitamente como explicación, entre las principales se encuentran el cambio demográfico, el aumento de precios en las matrículas y una disminución de los ingresos de las familias. Pero ¿qué tan ciertas son y qué tanto impactan en la caída? En este estudio se estableció una metodología que permite abordar la respuesta mediante un enfoque cuantitativo en el análisis exploratorio y descriptivo en los datos administrativos de las entidades oficiales en Colombia. Se encontró que las hipótesis relacionadas con el entorno socioeconómico y el financiamiento explican mejor la caída y contracción de la demanda en la educación superior.

The specialized media on the higher education sector in Colombia speak of the fall in demand. But what does this statement refer to? What do we mean when we talk about the “fall”? Different hypotheses have been tacitly accepted as an explanation, the main ones being demographic changes, rising tuition prices, and a decrease in family income. But how true are they and how much do they impact the fall? This paper establishes a methodology that allows addressing the response through a quantitative approach in the exploratory and descriptive analysis of administrative data from official entities in Colombia. It was found that the hypotheses related to the socio-economic environment and financing better explain the fall and contraction of demand in higher education.
