Abstract

ROLDAN VALENCIA, Ismael; GIRALDO, Diana Sofía  and  FLOREZ, Miguel Ángel. What Insurgent Groups Think about Colombian Media. rev.colomb.psiquiatr. [online]. 2008, vol.37, n.4, pp.504-515. ISSN 0034-7450.

Introduction: In this paper the speakers that represent FARC, ELN and AUC talk about what they think about the media. Method: The paper is based on interviews made in 2001 (FARC, ELN) and 2002 (AUC) with authorized representatives of the armed groups. Results: The interviews point out that the armed groups believe freedom of the press and public opinion don’t exist and that the media is a monopoly that serves those in power. In the case of AUC they say that the media should be at the service of the State. Conclusion: The guerrilla groups (FARC, ELN) and paramilitary (AUC) maintain that the media in Colombia do not portray in an objective manner the reality of the Colombian conflict and claim that they serve those in power. They see Colombian reality divided between friends and enemies with the media "in the hands of our enemies." As their fundamental rhetoric they play the part of victims of both the State and Society. In that sense they seek to mobilize the public´s tendency to identify with the victims.

Keywords : Media; guerrilla groups; paramilitaries.
