Abstract

ALVARADO VARGAS, Robinson Francisco. From Machadian Modernity to the Bases of Brazilian Modernism: a Reading of the Critique of Joaquim Maria Machado de Assis. Lit. teor. hist. crit. [online]. 2014, vol.16, n.2, pp.89-121. ISSN 0123-5931.  https://doi.org/10.15446/lthc.v16n2.47217.

This paper interprets the function and role of literature and literary criticism in some articles published by Machado de Assis during the second half of the 19th century. This search is intended to establish a link between literary notions, Machado’s critique and some literary premises that encouraged the progress of Brazilian modernism. The article outlines different aspects which allow a glimpse of the modernity of the Machadian thinking about the literary and proposes points of contact which would suppose the presence of the author’s thought in the ideas and issues discussed by the Brazilian avant-garde in the early decades of the 20th century.

Keywords : Machado de Assis; modernity; modernism; literary criticism.
