Abstract

PEREZ PENUELAS., Belén Obdulia. Problems in the Delimitation of Urban Fragmentation due to Sharing Processes with Other Urban impacts. Rev. Ciudades Estados Política [online]. 2021, vol.8, n.2, pp.143-160.  Epub May 13, 2022. ISSN 2462-9103.

This article aims to show the complexity of the delimitation of urban fragmentation and establish the differences between concepts such as dual city, segregation, and social division of space, concepts with which it shares processes. Therefore, certain aspects encourage interpreting them as synonyms, which generates identification and delimitation problems between them. The methodology consisted of consulting bibliographic sources mainly on urban fragmentation and the concepts of dual city, urban segregation, and social division of space. We focused on Latin America as it is the region where postmodern economic and urban changes took place, which, in a certain way, favored the simultaneous development of various processes.

This article's originality consists of bringing together the various intervening aspects in the delimitation of urban fragmentation and the concepts that lead to processes in the first line of analysis and, therefore, with which it is most similar; however, sometimes, they get confused.

As a result, despite being highly studied, there are still theoretical-conceptual gaps regarding urban fragmentation due to not having a clear and precise delimitation. This leads to identification and delimitation problems with other urban phenomena, causing the concept to be described similarly to another or not to use all the key elements that describe each one.

Keywords : dual city; social division of space; urban geography; urban impacts; urban restructuring; segregation.
