The article explores the spending level and the major sectors of financing and execution of research and development (R & D) in Latin America, given the importance of this issue on competitiveness and innovation capacity of enterprises and territories. In addition, the role of certain sectors in financing and execution constitutes a first indication of the degree of consolidation of the triple helix and the knowledge economy in Latin America. Regarding the methodology, a documentary strategy was developed emphasizing the retrieval, analysis and discussion of literature sources. In this case, we collect information about expenditure on R & D in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, Panama, Peru, Paraguay and Uruguay during the 2006-2010 periods. The information comes from the following databases: the Ricyt, the Ocyt and the Passport GMID. Concerning the theoretical approach, the study is mainly located in the construct R & D indicators, specifically R & D spending versus GDP and per capita expenditure in the following sectors: government, business, higher education, nonprofit organizations and foreign.
