Resumen

CONDE CALDERON, JORGE  y  ALVAREZ HERNANDEZ, LEA. Dressing the politic body. The clothing of free women in Cartagena, Portobelo and Valledupar, 1792-1807. Hist. Caribe [online]. 2023, vol.18, n.42, pp.17-41.  Epub 13-Ago-2023. ISSN 0122-8803.  https://doi.org/10.15648/hc.42.2023.3625.

This article analyzes the use of silk dresses and luxurious objects among commoner women in three cities of the New Kingdom of Granada: Cartagena, Portobelo and Valledupar. The fact is part of the changes that occurred in both the political and social body at the end of the 18th century and the beginning of the 19th century. This originated controversial reactions from the Spanish authorities and white women, who did not accept that brown and mulatto women wore the same attire they had always worn. Additionally, it claims that clothing and luxurious items served as suitable means for political expression, enabling a rich, expressive, and participating commoner culture.

Palabras clave : brown women; mulatto women; silk dresses; luxurious objects; commoner culture.
