CRUZ SANCHEZ, Pedro Alberto. The Immanent Return of Language: Impressions d'Afrique by Raymond Roussel and its Influences in the Work of Marcel Duchamp. Lit. teor. hist. crit. [online]. 2017, vol.19, n.1, pp.39-61. ISSN 0123-5931. https://doi.org/10.15446/lthc.v19n1.60542.
The presence of Marcel Duchamp at one of the showings of Impressions d'Afrique by Raymond Roussel, at the Théâtre Antoine in Paris in May of 1912, constitutes one of the inescapable landmarks when studying the life and work of the author of the Grand Verre. The objective of this article is to broaden the narrow frame of reflection in which usually are addressed the connections between both figures of the European vanguard, and to find echoes of Roussel's famous procédé in the work of Duchamp. To do so, the study will focus on key aspects in the construction of Impressions d'Afrique including its bipartite structure, homophony and materiality of the linguistic sign.
