Abstract

Purpose/Context.

This research aimed to analyze the axiological competencies in the training of biologists in six universities in southeastern Mexico and their relationship to contextual issues. The study is based on the importance of developing axiological competencies to acquire a professional profile that reflects both individual and collective values, in order to address the various problems, present in an environment with a high level of biodiversity.

Methodology/Approach.

A review of the curricula of the bachelor’s in biology from each university was conducted, and the perception of students and faculty was analyzed through questionnaires administered by each educational institution.

Results/Findings.

The presence of axiological competencies was identified in the curricula. The responses from students and faculty highlighted the importance of obtaining information about ethical issues applied to biology.

Discussion/Conclusions/Contributions.

A panorama of the ethical and bioethical components in the training of biologists is presented, showing an association between axiological competencies and the contextual problems within universities. The work of biologists is shown to be complex and transdisciplinary.
