Abstract

RESTREPO GUTIERREZ, JUAN CAMILO; RESTREPO BAENA, OSCAR JAIME  and  TOBON, JORGE IVÁN. EFFECTS OF THE ADDITION OF METAKAOLIN IN PORTLAND CEMENT. Dyna rev.fac.nac.minas [online]. 2006, vol.73, n.150, pp.131-141. ISSN 0012-7353.

This work presents a review of different studies about metakaolin (MK) addition in Portland cement. All these studies consider matakaolin as puzzolan effect. Here the effects of puzzolan in cement are studied. Metakaolin is an aluminosilicate material obtains by calcination of kaolin clay at 500-600°C transforming its structure composition. Metakaolin have been used to obtain better results of mixes and mortars using it like natural puzzolan. Metakaolin reacts with free calcium hydroxide [Ca(OH)2] from hydratation process of cement to obtain secondary C2S, it reacts with calcium silicate hydrated called Tobermorite gel improving mechanical properties of mixes.

Keywords : Portland Cement; Puzzolans; Metakaolin; Activated cements.
