Abstract

TRUJILLO E, Héctor Iván; ARISTIZABAL A., Luís Fernando; BUSTILLO P, Alex Enrique  and  JIMENEZ Q., Mauricio. Evaluation of methods to quantify populations of the coffee berry borer Hypothenemus hampei (Ferrari) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae), in farms of coffee growers experimenters . Rev. Colomb. Entomol. [online]. 2006, vol.32, n.1, pp.39-44. ISSN 0120-0488.

Tthrough participative research two methods for sampling the abundance of the coffee berry borer CBB populations were compared in the field with the objective of contributing to the integrated management of this insect,. This experiment was carried out in 11 farms: (four in Quimbaya, two in Belalcazar, one in Viterbo, three in Balboa and one in Risaralda). A commercial plot of coffee was selected from each farm and the infestation of CBB was evaluated using the two methods: Method of the 30 Branches (both the number of green fruits by branch and the number of fruits infested by the CBB are quantified, later on the infestation percentage is determined). Method of the Measure (initially the distance that contains 50 green fruits is assessed through direct measurement in 100 branches; this distance is used later on to make the monthly samplings but counting the fruits infested in only 30 branches. Later, the infestation percentage is determined). The sampling method of the 30 branches obtained similar results to the method of the measure, but the last one requires less time. The levels of CBB infestation were similar among the two sampling methods. The coffee growers show interest in continuing evaluating this new sampling method (Method of the measure). They indicated that with this new sampling method they save time.

Keywords : Participative research; sampling methods; integrated pest management.
