Abstract

TOMASINI BASSOLS, Alejandro. The later wittgenstein's philosophy of mathematics. Prax. filos. [online]. 2014, n.39, pp.11-40. ISSN 0120-4688.

In this paper I start off by presenting and explaining the mature Wittgenstein's key notions thanks to which he is in a position to develop his new conception of mathematics (basically, "language-game", "criterion", "grammar" and "family resemblances"). I then reconstruct Wittgenstein's views concerning the fundamental themes in his meditation like the peculiar nature of mathematical propositions, the analysis of the concept of number, the decisive character of proofs, the rejection of foundationalism and more generally of metamathematics, the issue of applying a rule and the general subject of contradictions. If my exposition is both faithful and correct, an original picture of mathematics emerges out of these considerations in which the usual mistakes of traditional schools of philosophy of mathematics are systematically excluded

Keywords : rule; number; proof; contradiction; foundation.
