Resumen

SALAZAR-CEBALLOS, ALEXANDER  y  ALVAREZ-MINO, LÍDICE. The heat index: an early warning factor in public health and sustainable cities. Salud, Barranquilla [online]. 2019, vol.35, n.3, pp.440-449. ISSN 0120-5552.

The fulfillment of the Sustainable Development Goals seeks a balance between development, the environment and public health. And the heat index is an early warning tool in reducing cardiovascular mortality contributing to the decrease of urban heat islands and the design of sustainable cities. Tis index is also increased by the decrease in vegetation.

Objective:

The objective of the present work was to observe the behavior of temperature, relative humidity and the heat index in three cities of the Colombian Caribbean: Barranquilla, Cartagena and Santa Marta, between 1972 and 2017.

Methods:

The data was obtained from the Instituto de Hydrology, Meteorology and Environmental Studies. An image of Santa Marta was obtained from the Landsat 8 satellite with the infrared color filter to differentiate vegetation and densely populated areas.

Results:

Tere was an increase in the annual average temperature and the heat index in the study period; Santa Marta presented the highest values. In the satellite image it was observed that Santa Marta has a high population density with little vegetation.

Conclusion:

The heat index is a tool to consider in the measurement of sustainable cities.
