Abstract
ORJUELA LONDONO, Álvaro et al. A study of butyl acetate synthesis: 2- Analysing chemical equilibrium conditions. Ing. Investig. [online]. 2005, vol.25, n.3, pp.13-21. ISSN 0120-5609.
In this work, a study on the liquid phase esterification reaction of acetic acid and butyl alcohol (Patm = 560 mmHg) was made, using an ion exchange resin (Lewatit K-2431) as catalyst. A set of assays to determinate, catalyst load, temperature and molar ratio (acid/alcohol) effect on the chemical equilibrium constant were carried out. The selective sorption phenomenon of the components over the resin matrix was noticed, and its effect on the equilibrium conditions, with different acid/alcohol starting ratio, was verified. A non-ideal model (UNIQUAC) was used in order to calculate the component activities, and standard free energy and enthalpy of esterification were calculated (ΔGº= -1.874 Kcal/mol, ΔHº= -5.335 Kcal/mol), corresponding with the reported data from previous works. Finally, an expression to calculate equilibrium constant, with an apparent character, was obtained considering thermal effects and those associated with liquid-polymer phase equilibrium. Such expression is in good agreement with the experimental and reported data.
