Abstract

MARULANDA AREVALO, José Luddey; BURBANO, Victor Manuel  and  PELAEZ, Jaime Andrés. Analysis of stainless steel weldability with medium and low carbon by SMAW steel. Rev. Fac. ing. [online]. 2013, vol.22, n.35, pp.91-100. ISSN 0121-1129.

It presents a weldability study of the austenitic stainless steels AISI 304 and AISI 316 with medium and low carbon steel AISI 1020 - AISI 1045, using as filler materials, the electrodes Eutectrode® 52 NG, 54 NG and 57 NG, by the shield metal arc welding process (SMAW). To analyze these electrodes' weldability for joining stainless steels with carbon steels, some metallographic and mechanical tests were performed for hardness, bends and strength, in order to observe the behavior, both in the heat affected zone, and in the weld bead, regarding the welded joints changes in the mechanical and metallurgical properties around the different welded regions. During the arc welding process, it was followed a welding procedure specification (WPS), in order to enable that the results were repeatable, and minimizing the hot and the cold cracking, the sigma phase formation and the carbides precipitation' problems.
