Abstract

KOHAN, Walter Omar. For or against Paulo Freire? Thinking Philosophically about a Legacy, between Ideological Disqualification and Academic Criticism. Pedagogía y Saberes [online]. 2021, n.55, pp.25-40.  Epub Feb 14, 2022. ISSN 0121-2494.  https://doi.org/10.17227/pys.num55-13121.

This text proposes a conceptual reflection around the figure of Paulo Freire and possible ways to relate to his opera and life. After a brief presentation of the general aim of this writing, it contextualizes Freire's most recognized work, Pedagogy of the Oppressed, showing the context where it was written during Paulo Freire's exile in Chile and offers some data on its impact in Brazil and other countries. It focuses on three main modes of relationship that this book and Freire's work and life have most characteristically provoked within and outside of Brazil: a) ideological disqualification; b) friendly exegesis; c) academic criticism. It describes and exemplifies each of these positions and finally draws some conclusions about the meaning and sense of his work and life through five principles (life; equality; love; errantry and childhood/infancy) that unfold the political nature of education affirmed by the Pernambuco educator.

Keywords : Paulo Freire; critical pedagogy; ideology; Pedagogy of the Oppressed; childhood.
