Abstract

CABALLERO REINOSO, César. DIGITAL METRICS: FROM THE GODS OF OLYMPUS TO CLUSTERS IN THE CLOUD. anal.polit. [online]. 2023, vol.36, n.106, pp.165-181.  Epub Oct 07, 2023. ISSN 0121-4705.  https://doi.org/10.15446/anpol.v36n106.111071.

This article highlights and explores one of the great paradoxes of our time: the statistical tools that strengthened democracies and allowed human beings to free themselves from the idea of predestination are being used by large digital corporations to turn us into their prisoners. Specifically, these companies extract user data, process it in different ways, and generate economic benefits from it without giving any kind of recognition to users. Similarly, social media has become the premier forum for debate, despite its functioning that rewards the most active and impulsive users and penalizes those who refrain from sharing less radical opinions. The text includes empirical data that account for what happens in Colombia in terms of data collection by technology conglomerates and the use of social media by citizens.
