Abstract

OLIVEROS-TASCON, C. E  and  SANZ-URIBE, J. R. Engineering and Coffee in Colombia. rev.ing. [online]. 2011, n.33, pp.99-114. ISSN 0121-4993.

Engineering contributions are crucial for the economic, environmental and social sustainability of coffee growing in Colombia, undertaken by approximately 600.000 families. Through rigorous research, engineering has allowed the development of technologies that render agricultural labors and processes more efficient and sustainable. Technologies have been developed for manual harvesting, wet processing of coffee with a reduction of over 98% of water consumption and over 90% of water contamination, and appropriate efficient solar and mechanical coffee dryers.

Keywords : Coffee; drying; ecological process; engineering; harvesting; processing.
