Abstract

LOSADA, Leandro. Social Elites and Political Elites in Argentina. Buenos Aires, 1880-1930. colomb.int. [online]. 2016, n.87, pp.219-241. ISSN 0121-5612.  https://doi.org/10.7440/colombiaint87.2016.09.

The article analyzes the structure and composition of the elites of Buenos Aires between 1880 and 1930. A prosopographical approach is presented that reveals indicators related to political, economic, cultural and symbolic capital (family origins) among members of the political, economic and social elites. The arguments are especially focused on the relationship between social elite and political elite. Based on this, the article presents hypotheses regarding the impact of the democratic expansion of the political system (which occurred in 1912) and, more generally, of Argentina's transformation into a mass society in the early 20th century.

Keywords : Argentina; democracy; elites (Thesaurus); mass society; XIX century; XX century (author's keywords).
