This article develops a genealogy of the expression "the literary thing". It questions the polysemy of literature, both from the outside and from within. It outlines how the expression "the literary thing" presents a dilemma, composed of the following two problems: "the thing" is the substance understood as the production of meanings carried by the literature and, simultaneously, is the set of material conditions, historical and social, connected with its production. The conclusion is that the literature produces the thing at the same time as the thing produces the literature.
