Abstract

MENDEZ COTA, Gabriela. Faces of corn, neoliberal rethorics: biotechnology and new cultural studies. Nómadas [online]. 2015, n.43, pp.57-73. ISSN 0121-7550.

This article offers an interpretation of the rhetoric of activists and organizations in the Mexican biotechnological debates, based on the theoretical background and the methods of intervention that typify "new cultural studies." The goal is to displace the moralizing judgments through a rigorous analysis of the political-cultural challenges faced by the defense of native corn. The conclusion is that these challenges are, as in neoliberalism, also political, not merely economic.

Keywords : biotechnology; activism; corn; nationalism; neoliberalism; cultural studies.
