PLATA, William E. y FIGUEROA SALAMANCA, Helwar H.. Church, Peaceful Resistance and Nonviolence. The Diocese of Barrancabermeja, Colombia (1988-2005). Anu.hist.reg.front. [online]. 2017, vol.22, n.1, pp.137-168. ISSN 0122-2066. https://doi.org/10.18273/revanu.v22n1-2017006.
The armed conflict in Colombia is not only passively faced by the civilian population, as there are multiple strategies of peaceful resistance, some of them are led by the Catholic Church, unfortunately only a little are recounted. One of these processes occurred in the Barrancabermeja Diocese where the clergy and bishops committed to a social pastoral, heir to the Theology of Liberation, promoted peaceful resistance and nonviolence. An obvious strength in the testimonies analyzed in the light of the literature on the Colombian conflict and religious fact. Excels the fact that the civil resistance led by the Church emerged in a territory of recent colonization and rebellious tradition with a historical presence of social struggles, starring by the USO and movements; peasant, civic and defense of human rights, in a scenario where the guerrillas and paramilitary counterinsurgency fight each other since 1980.
