Abstract
CARRILLO-INZUNZA, Aymara and FERREIRA-CABRERA, Anita. Context of Negative Transfer Errors in the Use of Prepositions: a, en, de, para, and por From English as L1 to Spanish as a Foreign Language (SFL). Folios [online]. 2020, n.51, pp.150-161. Epub July 07, 2020. ISSN 0123-4870. https://doi.org/10.17227/folios.51-8612.
This is a quantitative and qualitative study which analyzed the context of the most frequent negative transfer errors related to the use of prepositions: a, en, de, para, and por. These errors were found in written texts produced by native English speakers learning SFL in contexts of formal instruction. This study is based on Error Analysis methodology and Corpus Linguistics procedures, as far as the steps are concerned proposed by Corder (1967): corpus collection, identification, cataloging, description and explanation of errors. Results demonstrate that the most frequent errors are wrong selection of en to express possession, wrong selection of para in infinitive as noun complement, addition of a in verbal regency, and last, omission of a in object pronouns with verbs as gustar. From these results on, it is possible to work on taxonomy in order to classify negative transfer errors, facilitating its identification and treatment.
