Abstract

LONGONI, Bruno Andrés. About Misreadings and Remorts: Uribe de Estrada's Reptil en el tiempo. Folios [online]. 2022, n.56, pp.17-30.  Epub Nov 09, 2022. ISSN 0123-4870.  https://doi.org/10.17227/folios.56-12621.

Ever since Colombian writer María Helena Uribe de Estrada published her magnum opus Reptil en el tiempo in 1986, critics have split, with very few exceptions, between misrepresentation and silence. After checking on four of the most representative interpretations of the novel (existentialist, Bildungsroman, feminist and postmodern), we proposed to retrieve the capital figure of philosopher Fernando González as a moral and intellectual mentor for the stoic and theological utopia contained in the pages of Reptil en el tiempo. The deliberately ambiguous nature of Uribe de Estrada's poetic prose represents in the literary form the irresolute nature of his allegorical heroine, a woman tirelessly torn between the urgent satiety of pleasures and an ideal of overcoming and transcendence that make her a scarred animal and contradictory.

Keywords : Uribe de Estrada; Reptil en el tiempo; Remorse; Fernando González; latinoamerican literature.
