Abstract

REMEDI, Gustavo. The Inevitability of Theory: The Process of Literary Theory and the Challenge of Transmodernity. Lit. teor. hist. crit. [online]. 2019, vol.21, n.2, pp.49-82. ISSN 0123-5931.  https://doi.org/10.15446/lthc.v21n2.78663.

To begin with, the article asserts the need to reflect critically on the origin and development of Literary Studies, paying special attention to the role played by theory as premise, background, and project, even when it is not addressed explicitly or when it is rejected outright. Secondly, it provides a brief account of the manner in which "theory" was incorporated into and became part of academic critical work. Finally, it suggests a double operation: using that tradition critically and embracing the development of specific objectives, categories, and tools in line with the project of transmodernity. Thus, it proposes non-exclusionary possible lines of research aimed at both the critical re-reading of the canon from the perspective of the project of transmodernity and the generation of new research "objects" related to the popular public sphere.

Keywords : literary theory; critical theory; transmodernity; popular public sphere.
