In view of the shortfalls and claims of approaches coming from central academies, which perpetuate Latin American dependency, the article proposes a comparative theory and method to study Latin American literature and culture. The type of comparative study suggested articulates the regional dimension emphasized in the work of Ángel Rama, which makes it possible to organize segments within the continental culture, and the supranational dimension that aims at synthesizing transnational approaches. In addition to establishing the principles of this comparative study, which departs from the classic formulation of the method and incorporates specifically Latin American theories, the text includes a concrete example of comparative analysis, focused on the French Caribbean, thus responding to one of the most pressing needs for integration in Latin America.
