Resumen

ROBLEDO ESCOBAR, Natalia  y  LANGEBAEK RUEDA, Carl Henrik. From labrador to peasant: social representations in present-day Colombia, 1780-1866. Rev. colomb. antropol. [online]. 2022, vol.58, n.1, pp.89-114.  Epub 31-Dic-2021. ISSN 0486-6525.  https://doi.org/10.22380/2539472x.2004.

The article addresses, from a qualitative and anthropological perspective, the social representa-tions of agriculturalists between 1780 and 1866, by peninsular officials, literary elites and costumbrist authors. It is argued that Independence led to a rupture in the representation of agriculturalists, which was reflected in the transition from labrador to peasant as the predominant term of use. Although they shared a good part of their alleged defaults, peasants were attributed a more positive role in country's future. The more benign look towards peasants made them functional to nation-building and permitted moving towards considering them important to national identity.

Palabras clave : labradores; peasants; social repre-sentations; colonialism.
