Abstract

JORQUERA SILVA, Natalia. Comprehensive method for assessing the seismic risk of the minor architectural heritage. Apuntes [online]. 2014, vol.27, n.1, pp.52-63. ISSN 1657-9763.  https://doi.org/10.11144/Javeriana.APC26-2.mies.

Seismic risk is one of the main threats to the preservation of the built heritage, especially those considered "minor", "popular" or "vernacular", which, unlike the monumental heritage, is not often identified as a cultural legacy and therefore does not have adequate conservation policies. Added to this lack of recognition, this heritage which in many cases represents the abode of thousands of people around the world is in a bad condition because their owners do not have the financial or technical resources to perform appropriate maintenance. With every earthquake important part of this heritage disappears and the lives of thousands of people are endangered. In this context, this paper presents a comprehensive method for assessing the seismic risk of the minor architectural heritage, which is part of the results of the author's doctoral thesis entitled Earth Constructive Cultures and seismic risk. Knowledge of traditional Chilean architecture and evaluation of its vulnerability to earthquake (Jorquera, 2012). This method is applicable to different contexts, it decomposes risk into "threats" and "vulnerabilities" and considers in addition to the seismic variables, the environmental and constructive vulnerabilities of the heritage.

Keywords : minor architectural heritage; Vernacular architecture; Seismic risk; seismic risk assessment.
