ACHIPIZ-FAJARDO, JAMIR; GALVEZ-CAMPO, GEISON MAURICIO; MORALES-VELASCO, SANDRA  y  VIVAS-QUILA, NELSON JOSE. GUARANGO (Mimosa quitensis) AN FORAGE OPTION FOR COLDWEATHER LIVESTOCK SYSTEMS. Rev.Bio.Agro [online]. 2014, vol.12, n.2, pp.71-80. ISSN 1692-3561.

The research was make in the municipalities of Popayan, Silvia, Puracé and Totoro of the Cauca town between 2000 to 3000 m.a.s.l. The objective was to determine the ability to forage and its potential in cold weather livestock systems. Assessed productive aspects (capacity of regrowth, force, diameter, weight and height), as well as biometric parameters such as area of gloomy and forms frequent use of the species in the area. For seed germination tests were compared four scarification treatments (T1: sandpaper and soak in heated water;) T2: sulfuric acid 40% for 10 minutes; T3: hot water at 80°C for 2 minutes; T4: witness without any treatment) and four replicates under a completely randomized experimental design, assessing quality and viability. The bromatological results showed that the contents of tannins and neutral detergent fiber are high, on the other way the scarification tests helped identify that treatments T1 and T3 presented better results in the germination process, this aspect is important for the tree nursery establishment to encourage the species in the area.

Palabras clave : Forage production; Seed viability.
