This text intends to show historical and theoretical problems implied in the composition of the pictorial and erotic novel In praise of the stepmother, by the Peruvian Mario Vargas Llosa. The analytic reading of this verbal and visual work is faced up to historical topics like the ancient discussion on the qualitative differences between poetry and painting, the Enlightenment's arts classification, the nineteenth century discussion about the total work of art, the question to the artistic languages limits, and theoretical ones: ekphrasis, hypotiposis, visual and verbal narration, the meaning in visual arts, and the visual-literary avant-garde experiments. Everything tries to explain the different ways of narrative hybridization through resources arising from novel and painting.
