Abstract

WEINBERG, Liliana. Essay and Humanism. Co-herencia [online]. 2014, vol.11, n.20, pp.59-76. ISSN 1794-5887.

This article reflects upon the relationships among the essay, humanism and the humanities. It seeks to characterize each of these concepts in terms of their etymology and history, as well as to highlight their bond. There is a focus on Michael de Montaigne, essayist and humanist whose legacy is considered highly topical. It is proposed to meditate on the scope of the statement in good faith with the warning open ''To the reader''. This work closes with the interpretation of fear, one of the greatest topics addressed by Montaigne in his essays, and whose individual and social drifting is being felt today in a renewed way. Some tasks are proposed in order to create a ''new humanism'', open and inclusive.

Keywords : Essay; Humanism; Humanities; Montaigne.
